Hey, I am looking to purchase a OBD2 scan tool so I dont have to go to Auto Zone or my mechanic... I looked online at several different ones from Discount Auto and eBay and finaly came accross a USB scan tool that connects to a laptop. It suppously works with all makes/brands of cars (Domestic, Asian, European...) The software also give you some other info besides the error scan and CEL reset, like; speed, RPM, temps, 0-60, 1/4mi, and so on... depending on the software. (most of the soft. is free to download). My question is if anyone has it and if it works well??? The price is not much more than the OBD2 scan tool from an automotive store but offers more cool options... Please respond and let me know what you think so I can make my decision. :)
Thanks!!!
PS. here is a link to one of the websites that offers the USB OBD2 tool:http://www.obd2allinone.com/sc/details.asp?item=obd2usb
(there are other sites... but they offer best price)

I have used the Alex Pepper scan tool for years and have had good success with it.

Many people use the Autotap (which is more expensive but worth the money)

I have now switched to HPTuners (www.HPTUNERS.com) which has one of the best scanners I have ever seen and also is a pcm programmer so I can completely modify my pcm.

I have used it to change gears, change fuel injectors, maf sensors, shift points, transmission fluid line preassure, etc etc etc......

If you are just looking for basic scan tool with some real time feed back, I have the Auterra palm based scan tool.

It connect to my Sony clie and lets me monitor the important sensors in real time as well as retrieve codes from flash memory.

It handles just about any brand of car and it is smaller and lighter than my laptop for moving about.

looks like hptuners in gm only?

Sorry, I thought they sold to ford and dodge also because there is a whole section on their tuning forum that is dedicated to ford and onther section for dodge owners.

Well, If you buy a gm HPTuners is where its at ;)

NGS Tester here with all the cards. Scanners are nice, but this will access and test EVERY ford component that talks to the pcm, like the driver's door module, hvac, trip computer, etc.

There you go. The best you can buy. But you pay for it. Just make sure you get one that is CAN capable.

Pay for it, indeed. I've owned cars that cost less than the NGS tester--heck, I've owned a few cars whose combined value was less than the cost of an NGS tester with CAN.

Of course, if I had the spare $2900 lying around, I'd probably buy one. :D

LOL! Yep. They're spendy....but worth it if you work on Fords. Shoot Sooner...you'd die if you knew what I had to pay for my Fluke O-scope!

I've used the generic $40 Harbor Freight code reader to pull codes from my Lincoln, my Mitsubishi, and my Chevrolet with no problems.

It's not real fancy, but it does the job. It also comes with a book that has the codes and their meaning.

it does - like the basic tools - but unclear if it can read the 'Ford' extended codes.
