im not sure if this is normal or not. when i driving my mark and i let off the gas pedal to coast it seems to just stay going the same speed and does not decelerate at all. it feels like as i hit the gas to go up to 35mph then i let off to caost back down to 30 it will stay going 35 till i hit the brake. is this normal for the marks? i was thinking maybe some sort of speed sensor needs to be replaced. i cleaned the throttle thinking the butterfly was hanging up but it still does it.

Two things, gear ratio and locking torque convertor. Well, and the car is HEAVY. But its normal. In fact, if it does not there maybe something wrong. With my new engine it did not but then I realized my MAF sensor was bad. With the new MAF the one thing I noticed was that my "coasting" was back.

I don't seem to have that coasting effect. My moms buicks (92 with 2.5L, 95 with 3.6L) seem to coast forever! Mine seems to slow down quickly.

Uhhh... That don't sound right.

The car should not keep going at (as you said 35mph for example), until you hit the brakes. Think about it for a second. That's like having the Cruise control on.

The throttle body is not a drive-by-wire (computer opened and closed) unit. It's hard connected to the gas pedal with a steel wire.

When you take your foot off the gas pedal, the throttle body plate should close, and the TPS should tell the computer that the TB plate is closed, so the computer can switch over to the IAC in order to keep air going into the engine and have it be ready for idle... aka, no surging from going from say, 3000rpm to idle. Ofcourse, there are other factors such as the "dashpot" function in the computer, but I doubt that's what the problem is. The "dashpot" in FI engines is all software.

The Torque converter should unlock below a certain speed. I just don't remember what that speed is. And even if it's supposed to stay locked at 35mph, I doubt it will do any good for coasting since when it's locked, it "connects" the engine directly to the drive train, causing more parasitic loss on the motor, which in turn causes it to "slow down" faster.

I'd say you have a problem. Check to see that the throttle body closes all the way after you take your foot off the accelerator. If it does close, then... I dunno. If it doesn't, check the TB spring, check the accelerator pedal to TB linkage and make sure it's not sticking.

I've never had a Mark VIII (or any other car for that matter) that "coasted" forever until I hit the brakes.

93 does but my 97 doesn't. It doesn't bother my brother (its his car)

It doesn't sound right to me either. Once you let off the gas pedal the car should start to slow down. It may coast but it won't keep going the same speed until you hit the brakes.

Maybe its the fwd on the buicks then. Because they seem to coast a lot more than the Mark. At least mines working right.

dpoll, Does your Mark coast down from 35mph if you take your foot off the accelerator and you hit a wall, without touching the brakes?

Mine doesn't, I pushed an overpass about 3 miles.... woulda kept going but I ran out of gas.

it will just stay at the same speed im going when i let off. it feels like you said, like its in cruise, but it wont pick up speed if i go uphill. if the road is flat it will just keep going the same, i did notice today it dropped a little. probaly about 1-2 mph but it still just dont feel right. i will check the throttle body more tonight. another thing i noticed, when i let off the gas the rpm should drop down to idle rpm, right? when i let off the gas and say im going along at 3k rpm it will only drop to about 28 rpm. im thinking maybe the idle screw or something could be set wrong??

Well in that case there is something wrong. 3k is REALLY HIGH to be "cruising" at in the first place. But dont touch the idle screw or things will really get messed up. Sounds like a bad IAC, tight throttle cable or vacuum leak maybe.

ok so i may sound dumb for asking this, what is the IAC and where is located? also, is hard to repair / change?

Idle air control valve - located next to the throttle body - TOTAL PITA to change. You can try removing it and cleaning it to see if that helps - it usually does.

Hey wood_e, its not gonna be hard for him, he's got a gen2.......lucky sob

anyone got a pic of it? just to give me a idea what im looking for, or a good description of it. thanks

ok i found a pic of it so i know what im looking for now, ill try cleaning it tonight. thanks!

Seeing that the question of the thread is normal; is this?

I've read about throttle body cleaner and etc, just not sure. Also is the iac up on the right behind the throttle body?

I was hoping you wouldn't say left! Looks like a really tight squeeze, which is why everyone hates it I guess. Oh well sooner or later
