When my 98 gets to 15 mph there is a noise like something latching, the doors lock as soon as you put it in drive so that's not it

I've searched the forums and can't find any information but I may not be using the right search terms

what the heck is this noise

Does it sound like it's something on the inside or could it be under the hood or in the trunk? What exactly does it sound like when you hear it? I know mine locks when I put it in drive but the only other thing I can think of that would do something at that speed after it has been started up would have to do with a bad or dirty wheel sensor and the ABS system ~shrugs~

Has me stumped!

It's the ABS going thru a self test.

That's what I was thinking too because of the speed he mentions but wasn't sure. My ABS light used to come on right at 20 mph in the 94 but I never messed with it. Drove it 5 years like that and the only thing I had to deal with was that amber light coming on. Never heard the latching sound or anything like that.

my 98 has done this since I got it (at 59k 6 years ago)

I know exactly what you are talking about but for the life of me cannot figure out what it is, it sounds like it comes from under the hood and only does it once per drive.

My marquis used to do this, but it was alot louder. Def abs self test.

Sounds like the same noise, it's really a soft noise and sounds like it comes from under the car, it's not a problem I'm just curious as to what it is

found it in All Data
Each time the vehicle is driven, as soon as vehicle speed reaches approximately 20 km/h (12 mph), the anti-lock brake control module turns on the pump motor for approximately one-half second. At this time, a mechanical noise may be heard. This is a normal function of the self-check by the anti-lock brake control module.

thanks all
