Recently started hearing a high pitch noise coming from the engine bay. Its not super loud but it is noticable at stop lights and when I pull into the garage. When I take engine cover off it seems to get slightly louder. Sounds like screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen...Lol any ideas

normally a noise like that is the iac. do you notice it while your driving?

Yea I hear it while driving

the iacv is bolted directly to your intake. under the engine cover. try pinpointing that. could be a vacuum leak, belt squal, compressor drag, alternator slip, anything. but if its under the engine cover id say its the IACV.

Loose belt will also cause a noise like that. Simple check, pull the belt and run the car for a few seconds, see if it still makes the noise. If the belt is worn, go ahead and replace the tensioner and the idler pulley. These have springs and/or bearings inside and are wear items. Careful on the idler pulley, make sure to get the correct size. Parts stores will say it's a 90MM pulley but it's more like a 72mm or 74mm or something, can't remember the exact size. Mine needed the smaller one. Noise will also travel in funny ways, so what sounds like is coming from the intake, may not be.

Does it stop if you turn the AC on? If so, it could be the AC clutch. If it is, then the sound should be a metallic grinding sort of noise.

im a bit of a technology geek... i would connect a regular stand alone desk mic to a laptop (or maybe even an android/iphone) and record the sound, as you pass the mic around different areas...the sound SHOULD get louder as you pass around where its coming from..

just a thought, not sure if it has any value...lol

Holy cow.
Get the car to make the noise. Get a long rubber hose (3' to 4'). Stick one end in your ear. Move the other end around the engine bay until you locate the source.

lol, that would be the manual way...move up to the digital age!

I would trust and prefer a mechanics stethoscope over a overly complicated setup with a computer, cables, and mic. i could have the source located long before the computer is done booting...

not to mention, if it is just a regular cheap desktop mic designed to pickup your voice, it could very easily get overloaded with all the other sounds coming from under the hood.

hell, could just put you ear to a long @ss screwdriver, everybody should have one of those.

You're new here. You're due at least a few more lashings. :D

Sometimes the simple answer is the better. As for tech, I'm building an arduino for my Cutlass to control various functions, and the ignition is driven by a programmable MSD box. So I'm more than happy to toss the laptop in the garage when needed!

Stethoscopes are good if the noise is coming from inside something, like lifters, valves, pumps, bearings, etc. Hose is much better for external noises like leaks. I'm chasing exhaust leaks most of the time.
