New here, need ideas, help-

I had a Weird no start yesterday, I drove my 96 mark 8 about 50 miles and it ran perfectly as always, then sat for about 4-5 hours. When I started it, it ran rough, so I shut it off and hooked up a scanner to see what tripped the CEL. My scanner (Acton 9145) would not communicate with the ECM? I use this thing all the time on my and other's cars, and I disconnected and reconnected it, no communication. I disconnected the neg post to the battery, waited a minute and hooked it up-now, NO start at all, just crank. Tried the scanner again, no communication-and i then noticed that the radiator fan was running with the key on-car was not hot, it ran maybe 10 seconds before I shut it off after having sat for over 5 hours. I disconnected BOTH battery connections and held the lugs together for a minute, hooked it up again and it just cranked the first couple of times-then it started, and was smooth and quiet. I drove home (50 miles) with no problems whatsoever-it ran perfectly? when I got home, i hooked up the scanner-it worked also, communicated immediatly. No codes (of course, bat was disconnected) so anyone here have any ideas? Would a crank sensor on it's way out do this? Why would the radiator fan run with the key on when the engine was not hot or even warm? No communication with the scanner was strange too, my first thought was a bad ECM? After getting home, I started it later when it was cold and no problems at all-starts right up, smooth and quiet, like it never happened.

thanks

the way to test if its a crank sensor is to unplug it then plug it back in, usually works. your symptoms sound right, except for the no ecm communication thats odd

No start, fan runs when key is on and engine is off, no communication with ECM?

it is normal now, that's what I don't get-why did it even happen? I have a new battery, alternator is good, I know these things are electrical nightmares at times, but I was 50 miles from home when this happened and I thought I was gonna have to get it towed-and wam, it acts like it never happened-wtf? i drove it all around today, at least a half dozen seperate trips, absolutely no problems. I hate it when a car is not dependable, if the crank sensor is going bad would that make the ECU not communicate to a scanner?

no start

Either there is no power to the ECM or the ECM is toast. If the fan runs with the key in the on position on a cold engine the computer is not telling it what to do.
Check the computer diode in the engine compartment fuse box along with the ECM fuse, if they are alright check the power wires to the ECM.

well I have driven it for at least 200 miles since this happened, and it runs perfectly. After doing a lot of research, I think I am going to just disconnect the Crank sensor, clean the connections with switch cleaner, and plug it back in-if it happens again, I will just replace the Crank Sensor.
Not communicating with the ECM makes no sense-I only tried it with the key on engine off, but my scanner should have connected to the ECM-so, I guess I'll wait and see if it happens again.
I am not going to look for trouble since it seems ok.
