Newbie with problems already....

I didn't think I would be posting about problems so soon! Only had the car 4 days and it started acting up last night. Car has 18,600mi on it. Last night my wife and I were driving home when suddenly the ABS light, traction control light, jumped on and a message displayed saying "traction control off, check system" or something to that context. I looked at the traction control button which had the light lit up on it and pressing the button did nothing. I pulled over in a parking lot and shut the car off and started it back up. The ABS stayed lit for about 30 secs then went out; traction contol went back to normal.

Now this morning, the car is idling EXTREMELY rough like its missing. When accelerating, you get the feeling of surging due to the rough idle. I purchased the extended warranty and am waiting for the dealer to call back. Figures this would happen on a Friday! Any clues? I also smell a strong exhaust....

What year is your car? V8 I assume since you have the message display? The engine problem sounds like it is probably failed coil(s). There is an extension to the factory warranty to replace bad coils on several years.

The ABS issue could be a wheel sensor, or something else. I would fix the coil issue first because sometimes bad coils cause other weird problems.

It is a 2005 LS8....
 
Your Lincoln dealer will stress test and replace any failing coils under an extended (no copay) factory warranty. I'd do that first. It also covers the valve cover gaskets, but only if they are leaking into the plug wells.

I'm waiting for a call back from the dealer as the Check Engine light is on now. The only thing that sucks is that I bought the car from a Chrysler/Jeep dealer, so not sure if they will fix or if they will send it to a lincoln/ford/mercury dealer. In order to get the co-pay waived, I have to take it to the Chrysler dealer.....

Not true! Please pay attention here. Take it to a Lincoln dealer. You have factory warranty on the coils. There will be no charge at the Lincoln dealer. Factory warranty was extended to 100K miles and ten years for all V8 LSs of the years 2003, 2004, and 2005. Yours is a 2005, it is less then 10 years old, it has less than 100,000 miles. The coils are fully covered at no cost, but only at a Lincoln, Ford, or Mercury dealer. There is no reason at all to use any of whatever warranty you may have bought at the Chrysler dealer.
This is Customer Satisfaction Program 07M07.

So the Chrysler dealer that I bought my ride from has had my car for 1 day. The extended warranty that I bought specified that if I took it to Chrysler then the deductible is waived. They ended up sending the car to the Ford dealer (which I knew they would do) across the street from them who has had the car 2 days now. I was getting no updates from the Chrysler service manager and called the Ford service manager myself.

Ford ran diagnostics and found engine coil #3 is bad. They also found that a wheel sensor is bad which is what triggered the ABS and Traction Control to disable. He is checking to see if my extended warranty will cover the coils. I asked about the factory warranty covering the coils in which the service manager says is not true. I trust what you guys are telling me on here but how to I get proof that the factory warranty covers this? This is nuts as I've only driven the car less than a week. I'm about ready to get my old 300M back and let them re-sell this car to someone else.

BTW, Ford themselves recommends taking LS's and Ford Thunderbirds to Lincoln dealers because most Ford dealers have no experience with these cars. I'm not surprised that the Ford dealer in unaware of the program. Print out the attached and take it to them or fax it to them.

your extended warrenty has nothing to do with this problem they shouldnt even be checking into this, if the service manager says it not true about the extended warranty, tell him to look up Customer Satisfaction Program 07M07, thats what it is called, thats why they fixed mine with 98,000 miles on the clock. again 07M07, if he says that he cant find the info on it, go to another dealer (ford lincoln or mercury) and just tell them to print you out the info for the program #, take it back to the lincoln dealer your car is at, and slap him in the face with the paper

I called Ford Motor Company directly and had them research this issue. She said that CSP 07M07 does cover my vehicle. I just called the service manager who says that it only covers the coils for water intrusion. I mentioned that FMC representative spoke with another service manager at that dealership who says that they would replace free of charge; he confirmed it.

The other issue is the right front ABS/Speed sensor which is bad. He says that they have to replace both sensors due to a redesign in the sensor; extended warranty will not cover it and it will cost me $250.00 to replace both sensors. He is also charging me a diagnostic fee of $110.00 for diagnosing the ABS/speed sensor problem. Diagnosis charge for the coils is waived due to it being covered under the factory warranty. Seems like this car may start nickel and diming me..... Is all of this normal with low mileage like this 18,700mi? I'm going to see if the Chrysler dealer will eat the costs.

R07M07 clearly says
"AFFECTED 2004 AND 2005 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES
Some of the vehicles may experience an engine misfire condition predominantly due to internal
breakdown in the coil and lack of adhesion between the epoxy and the coil housing material.
These issues may cause the coil to operate at an insufficient voltage level, resulting in ignition coil
misfires. Drivability symptoms associated with an ignition coil misfire include rough running
engine, surge or hesitation on acceleration, and/or illumination of the check engine light.

AFFECTED 2004 AND 2005 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES
If any of the above mentioned drivability issues are reported on an affected vehicle, dealers are to
identify any engine cylinder that is misfiring and perform an ignition coil stress test on the affected
cylinders. If the coil fails the stress test, dealers are to replace the ignition coil and associated
spark plug. This service will be performed on affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner."

That service manager needs a new job if he can't understand that.

Appreciated guys! Chrysler dealer called and said that they will eat all of the charges per the service contract with them, that gave me some relief! The car should be ready tomorrow. I wish they could just replace all of the coils, how often do these go bad and will the engine light always be an indication or just the misfire while idling and driving?

You may not always get a check engine light when a coil starts to fail. I didn't get one for any of the four that have failed so far on my 04 (now at 100K miles). So far there have been no coil failures on my 06 (now at 50K miles).
 
the best thing to do is to pull off the coil covers every so often (i check mine every time i do an oil change) and check to see if there is any oil on the coils or in the coil wells

Oil or water in the plug wells is not the only (or even the main) cause of coil failures. All four of mine failed with no oil, water, or evidence of prior water in the wells. The R07M07 letter indicates that Ford now admits to a design or manufacturing problem with the coils. "internal breakdown in the coil and lack of adhesion between the epoxy and the coil housing material."

I haven't had any oil leaks to the internal wells on either my 04 or 06. I think they did solve the gasket problem. Of course, with time and miles they [gaskets] eventually may fail. I remember the days when you had to replace the valve cover gaskets on all cars at least every 50K miles.
