Unfortunately, Ford ditched the awesome sounding 'TwinForce' moniker for the 'EcoBoost' name, I guess in light of the new CAFE standards and everyone's fuel economy worries.

But the engine for the MKS is a:

- 3.5L TT V-6 with 340 hp, and more than 340 lb-ft of torque (2K-5K rpm).
- 150 lbs lighter than the Yamaha V-8, and 20% more fuel efficient.

On their smaller cars, maybe the MKZ, they'll offer a TT V-4:

- 2.0L TT V-4 with 275 hp, 280 lb-ft torque

I would expect them to release an uprated TT engine of the slightly larger 3.7L Duratec in the future as well..

But 340 hp on an AWD MKS ain't too shabby.

Where else can you get a 340 hp V-6, or a 275 hp four cylinder? Not a big fan of the EcoBoost name, but I certainly am a fan of the power!

V-4? that's pretty unusual

275hp from a 4 cylinder 2.0L engine is pretty good.

The Mazda 2.3L turbo gets 275hp, and the Audi/VW only gets 200hp from their 2.0L. Heck, Audi can't get more than 275hp from the 3.2L in their A4/A5.

I think the difference is that Ford is aiming to make these TT engines mainstream, across all of its cars, rather than making them a niche market, in say WRC ricer screamers.

Or maybe, Delta-Force!

Can I replace my LS V8 with two turbo V-4s? ;)

yep. one under the hood, and one in the trunk...

Figures.... ford puts a great engine making great power (3.5L TT making 340/340) in an ugly car. But I fall in love with the looks of the new CTS and it only gets a 3.6L Direct Injection V6 making 304 hp at 6400 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque at 5200 rpm. Decent but I wanted more... after all the BMW 335 makes 300/300 from their 3.0L TT inline 6.

Come on GM, get with the program.

Wait until you get to see the MKS in person. I thought the new '08 CTS and Malibu looked pretty crappy on teh internets, but after seeing them in person, changed my mind.

MazdaSpeed6. Of course, it's 2.3L instead of 2.0L, and it's 270hp instead of 275hp, but it is direct injected and turbo'd. :D If you want it in a smaller package, you can get the 263hp variant in the MazdaSpeed3.

FWIW, it's almost certainly an I4, but Ford's press release only says "4-cylinder."

Alright I partially retract my previous statement. I must have had in mind the MKZ. I am still not a huge fan of the MKS looks though. It appears to be a combination of the Infiniti M and Pontiac G8 with a little Acura TL thrown in the mix (headlights). And why has ford gotten away from their RWD platform? GM seems to be moving back to theirs. O well.

One thing about the 08 CTS that caught my attention is that it is able to run 11.3:1 compression on regular unleaded fuel. This is higher than my LS. It must have something to do with the Direct Injection. I wonder if improvements can be made on that 304hp with some premium unleaded and an ECU tune.

Unfortunately the GTDI won't be available until 2010, the 09 will onlly be offered with the 3.5 from the Taurus

I believe it's the slightly uprated 3.7L that's standard, not the 3.5L.

However, according to the press release, it appears that Ford is introducing the EcoBoost in 2009, maybe late 2009?

FORD TO EQUIP HALF A MILLION VEHICLES WITH ECOBOOST ENGINE TECHNOLOGY FOR UP TO 20% BETTER FUEL ECONOMY

DETROIT, Jan. 6, 2008 – Ford Motor Company is introducing a new engine technology called EcoBoost that will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy on half a million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles annually in North America during the next five years.

The EcoBoost family of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines features turbocharging and direct injection technology. Compared with more expensive hybrids and diesel engines, EcoBoost builds upon today's affordable gasoline engine and improves it, providing more customers with a way to improve fuel economy and emissions without compromising driving performance.

"EcoBoost is meaningful because it can be applied across a wide variety of engine types in a range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks – and it's affordable," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development.

"Compared with the current cost of diesel and hybrid technologies, customers can expect to recoup their initial investment in a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine through fuel savings in approximately 30 months. A diesel will take an average of seven and one-half years, while the cost of a hybrid will take nearly 12 years to recoup – given equivalent miles driven per year and fuel costs," he said.

Ford will introduce EcoBoost on the new Lincoln MKS flagship in 2009
, followed by the Ford Flex and other vehicles. By 2013, Ford will have more than half a million EcoBoost-powered vehicles on the road annually in North America.

In 2009, Ford first will introduce EcoBoost on the Lincoln MKS featuring a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6. It will produce the power and torque of a V-8 engine with the fuel efficiency of a V-6. In fact, with an estimated 340-horsepower and more than 340 lb.-ft. of torque, the Lincoln MKS will be the most powerful and fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive luxury sedan in the market.

I believe it's the slightly uprated 3.7L that's standard, not the 3.5L.
Correct; the MKS will launch with the 3.7L Duratec. It's rated at 270hp (vs 263hp for the D35), but it should have better torque than the D35.

The TwinForce/EcoBoost will be launched in the MKS in 2009, but that's calendar year 2009, not the 2009 model year. It'll be either a late (very late) MY '09 or an MY 2010 addition. I'd bet on 2010, but we'll see.

Actually, I think it's 273 HP. :) At least according to the Mazda CX-9 that's going to be equipped with it.

You'd think they could squeeze out more than 10 hp improvement in an engine with 0.2L larger displacement.
