well today i get a call from the mechanic working on my 95, when i got it i noticed it had a junkyard engine in it, it was hard starting and when it did start rattled bad and had no power.. so i took it to my mechanic and feared the worse, well i got the worse. i need a new engine, so i asked for an estimate and he said reman, installed with warranty $2900.00 . i hope i did the right thing, i said go for it.........what do ya'll think.. its too late to back out, but i need a engine for the 98 lsc and im wondering if im looking at the same price again or what, dont get me wrong, im not cheap and i believe you get what you pay for and i'll pay for good work..

How long is the warranty?

From what it sounds like, no pictures of the interior and just the small one from the exterior, your car probably isn't worth $2900. I would just sell it and buy another one. If the interior and exterior are ok I would buy a used engine and forged internals (that is if you have the money :D); but I don't know your level of mechanical knowledge is.

I would so no, not a good deal. Did he tell you what was wrong with old engine. Bet its just some broken valve springs.

I just have a hard time believing peeps drop 2900 bucks into a 95 mk8. Like mentioned you can buy complete cars for that money.

Plus known good running engines for these can be had for 500 dollars.

Why in the world do you multiple all your comments in every thread you respond to? Just put all your comments in one response instead of 4 and 5 in a roll. Makes no sense what so every and creates too much scrolling. Unless you are trying to increase your thread response count, which is idiotic.

WTF

lol no i am jamie, and i sell mark VIII parts, but i am not jamie the mark VIII parts guy, i am jamie the human.

Do you think i really need to be a post whore. REALLY? REALLY? I was eating and stuff just pops in my head so between bites I answer. Is that good enough answer for YOU?

the warranty is 3/36
im very experienced mechanically, but i dont have the time, i work out of town in oilfield
my daughter fell in love with car so i elected to fix it and give it to her for college. otherwise probably would have just parted it out or sold it...
as for the problem with motor, it had no compression in 2 cylinders, im going on monday to look in cylinder and see if the pistons are holed, im keeping the engine and paying the core charge if its not , i need one for my 98.
i guess for me it comes down to how much youre time is worth, looking at it that way its cheaper than doing myself... either way its getting done. i see others think its too much, thanks for the honesty
also, that includes dropping fuel tank, to remove old gas, a new fuel pump, new seals on transmission and service, flushing cooling system, changing fluid in rear differential, and new pads and resurface rotorsall four wheels.... sorry i wasnt more clear, when he called i just wrote the info down and said go for it....

It is widely regarded as common courtesy on internet forums to combine all your thoughts into a singular post.

Its also common courtesy to not hijack threads. But no one has problems doing that to my threads.

Most of us here do our own work on our cars, that's one reason why we think that's a lot of money for the work. We've also seen many horror stories about people getting ripped off by other mechanics.

I see your point about how much your time is worth though, and all that work does take a lot of time.

My concerns would be what exactly is this reman engine? Is it just a short block or the whole long block (including heads, cams, ect.). Also is this a reputable mechanic that knows what he is doing? And is he going to try to charge you more when it is done?

I do all my own work, but I did pay a good friend to swap a used engine into my car once, because I didn't have the time. I knew the engine ran good because he bought the car as a parts car and he drove it with no problems. I also knew that he has done many engine swaps with these cars and is very used to working on them. The car runs great and he actually did a lot of extra work that was needed while the engine was out (new PS hose, oil pan refinished, new front trans seal, everything cleaned up and more).

I hope it works out for you, that is a lot of money, but hopefully the car will drive like new when you get it back.
