new code scanner or Software update ?

Oh decisions decisions ! I'd like to hear what a few of you guys think. I was talking with my mechanic today about my brakes and the subject of code scanners somehow got involved. I found out that the scanner he uses is only compatible with vehicles 2000 and before. I have an 06 btw. I don't want to find another mechanic. I trust this guy. When I drop my car off and call him in a day or so , its always ready and fixed right the first time. Unless its farming season. Then its a little harder to get him on the ball ! so here's my Q, do I buy my own scan tool ? Do I purchase some kind of software update , if so does it matter what scan tool he is using ? To be compatible.
Or should I go against my gut. , have some faith in Fords genius engineers and buy a V1 ? Haha.

why would his scanner only work with vehicles from 2000 and less? That would only be 4 years...not a very useful tool.

autozone will read you any codes for free or you can buy something like a scangauge that can give you codes also.

Sounds like he needs a software update for his scanner, if applicable. Maybe you could work something out with him for free repairs if you buy him the update/new scanner? You said he's a great mechanic, so it could be worth it.

Are you sure he knows what he is talking about? Has he ever scanned your car? Because if so, it wouldn't communicate.. Meaning he wouldn't get codes..

In my experiences, a scanner will only go about one model year before it starts loosing communication.. If its true, you can sometimes find update software on Ebay.. Sometimes, you can find good scanners like the Genesis on there for pretty cheap also..

If you have a gen II, he will almost certainly need a hardware update (or to replace the tool) to be able to connect to the CAN bus.

These guys sell a pretty good scan tool and updates are not too expensive.

Ok ill ask him why his scan tool won't read my codes. It probobly is an old tool. He's an old Mech. I thought about buying one from auto zone but I read that they only read a limited type of codes. He would be willing to upgrade his scanner I'm sure. If I can find the software
