Hey everyone, looks like it my turn with a transmission problem. When my car is completly stop and in drive I try to acclerate and the car slips and take awhile to move if I go real slow and then it catches and I am able to pull and get going. However, when I am up to speed everything is fine. I have to start in 2nd to get going and then shift to drive. I had the transmission rebuilt about 5 years ago and had kevlar bands put in and the whole nine yards, I changed my filter and had the oil replace about a year and a half ago. My question I have is, if my transmission is going out on me should I spend the money for a new filter and flush or should I start thinking on a 98 trans swap. Thank you for all you help.

Don't wanna seem like a dic but is there adequate fluid level........ and if it was rebuilt not to long ago it shouldnt have any problems unless it was a crappy job...... sounds like pump might be getting weak...... do u hear a whinning noise that wasn't there before... or Torque convertor probs just my $.02

None taken,

I made sure that I had fluid in. I have never been please with AAMCO work anyway. Long story but I had to take it back a couple of times and I always had a little TC shudder. They also broke the header on the drivers side becasue they didn't drop the exhaust. They had to have a new one made at the cost of $2500 dollars and they wanted to blame me. I will move on now. I do hear a whinning when I put the gear shift in Drive, it pretty loud and when it is cold everything works just fine but I do hear the whinning when it is put into drive.

What would the whining indicate?

Normally the whining would be happening while in park or neutral. That would be the valve body making that noise but if it's doing it in drive, TC and still possibly the valve body. I'd just swap it out for a 98 if you can get a hold of one.

Read the other trans post so you'll know what all is involved. It's worth the trouble. Pre 98 trans simply suck IMHO

Okay, should be looking for a low mileage 98 Mark VIII trans? In reading some of the other posts I see that other models will work. Will I be able to use my driveshaft. I have lot of questions and I will go over the post again. I guess I am in the market for a new transmission and TC. Thank you. I will be in touch.

I would think it be the pump but that's y I'm here to learn... but wen my buddy had a stock mustang gt trans behind a terminator engine lasted about 20k on top of the 78k it already had and it whined pretty bad and turned out the pump was goin out... now he has a built trans 4r100 parts.... but yeah trans is goin to go... get a 98 up trans....

I got my tranny from Performance Transmissions. It is a pre 98. The shop built it for a 700hp motor and then the guy died. The family didn't want it and it was paid for. They gave it to me for my stock 93 tranny. I have no idea whats done to it, but at WOT it shifts just above the redline and will chirp the tires everytime.

It sounds like the guy put in heavy clutches and modified the valve body with a hard shift kit. There are some other parts in the planetary gears that are weak and I am sure he replaced them with better quality parts... I don't know a lot about AT but I have a DVD on a GM700R4 POS... My expertise is in big rig MT models... I am glad you have a well-built tranny

I guess I should have phrased that differently. Stock pre-98 transmissions are pretty much junk. If it's well maintained and not abused in any way, it might stand the chance of living a long life but the TC they put in them and the accumulators and springs are no good. In 98, the 1-2 and 2-3 accumulator and springs were updated along with the TC design. The 93-97 end up shuddering after so many miles and or having to deal with certain types of abuse such as shifting manually. Never shift a 93-97 manually because you're asking for trouble and it will come quicker than you expect. If you want to swap from a 93-97 up to a 98 or 99 year trans and I think even a 2000, and 2001 will even work, the link below will tell you a lot about what you need to know. The process might appear to be hard but there is nothing to it at all.

I figured you meant stock. My stock tranny lost third gear at 70xxx miles. I was lucky to find the tranny I got. Sucks it was for a dead guy. I once bought a IROC parts car that a guy commited suicide in, so I guess its how I roll.

I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for all you help. I haven't put everything together yet but without your help I don't know where I would be. I don't want my car to die. Unity thank you for the information. I am meeting at my friends garage tomorrow to put the exhaust in my Mustang GT and we are going to arrange when it is a good time to get the Lic in to drop everything. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you
