I'm having more starting troubles with my 2000 V8 55,000 miles. I installed a new starter last Tuesday and it has started fine since then but now has the same symptoms as before. (http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=20242)
I checked the battery voltage and it reads 12.4volts.
When I turn the key the only thing that happens is the starter clicks. I have to jump start the car to get it started. It will start to say "Check Charging System" for a couple of minutes and then the message will go away. There seems to be no sign of alternator failure when the car is running(lights on along with other accesories). When the car is running it reads above 14 volts, so I'm assuming its charging good except when the "check charging system" message is on which reads a little above 12 volts, but like I said it only stays on there for a couple of minutes before going away.
I don't have any after market audio hooked up. I took the car to the dealer in which they said the problem was my after market audio but it wasn't hooked up.
I'm out of ideas and would like the help of you guys if you have any suggestions on what could be the problem.

Thanks

i would try the alternator since you have already changed the battery, and starter

good luck man

ps i have not had any starting trouble for a month now since i changed my battery and disconected my audio.

did you replace the battery?

I had the battery replaced in November. It seemed to test good, when I took it to the dealer a couple of weeks ago.
It still is under warranty. I'm sure they won't just give me a new one if I ask will they?

LikeNew02, I'm glad your not having any more troubles.
I just don't think it's the alternator, becuase once you get it running it's fine.

Don't count out the alternator/regulator. Instead of tossing parts at it, take it to a competent electrical shop and see if they can't find the problem. It sounds like the regulator is having troubles energizing the fields on the alternator.

Hey Hawk I would take it to GOOD electrical shop also. Best bet is relay or regulator like 2001LS8Sport said.
Good luck, bro I feel for you!

I took the alternator off the car last night to get tested and see how it preforms off of the car.
Where is the regulator at? Is if part of the alternator?

Alternator, battery tested fine.
I took the car back to the dealer and they said it was the starter. I brought it home and am awaiting a new starter to put in, be here Friday.

When it clicks and doesn't start I usually have to jump it and it will start.
Is this a symptom of a starter going bad? Or could it be something different?

Could be a bad solenoid connection. Have you checked for voltage drops too? This is why a competent electrical shop is worth it's weight in gold.

No I haven't checked for voltage drops. I'm not that good in that area which is why I took it to the dealer. The starter is from Napa and the second one they gave me wasn't good at all(wouldn't even click) which is why I am waiting until friday for a different one.
Dealership comment, "Diag'd no start, duplicated customer concern. 12 volt AN ground present in start position. Starter is failing internally."
I don't have any idea where an electrical shop is around here. I don't live in a populated area otherwise I would try one of those places.

Man Hawk sounds like u need your LS to catch fire so you can collect a insurance check then buy a 03 without the problems. HAHA Good luck my friend!

Does the LS have a solenoid/starter between the battery and starter? If it does it could be that. I am not familiar with the 3.9 engine system, but on older small block Fords from the 80s-90s, this was common. A $12 part fixed the problem. If it does make a clicking/whining sound when you turn the key and it doesn't start, perhaps you have a few bad starter gear teeth, in which case a starter would fix it.

I believe the problem has been found after about 5-6 months, three new starters and a lot of frustration. There seemed to be a loose battery cable behind the front passenger fender well plastic cover. The tech tightened it and it started right up and has been starting for the last couple of days without any problem. I'm hoping this was the fix.

Hawk3, has your starter problem gone away? I'm having a very similar problem with my 02 LS V8. The starter will just click occasionally. I have found letting it set for a few minutes to 1 hr it will normally start right up. Did tightening up the cable fix yours?
Any help would be appreciated,
Rick

My starting problems were fixed after they tightened the cable. I haven't had anymore problems since.

I am having the same problem right now. Little more description of the location of the loose cable would be great. Behind the passenger side fender well __________________
