More n00b questions...

Alrighty boys and girls...

First, thanks to all who have helped me already. I appreciate it greatly.

Second, my lovely 2000 LS V6 doesn't have an owners manual, so forgive me for asking seemingly lazy/stupid questions.

- Is there a cabin air filter? If so, where is it located/how do I change it?

- Are there any tricks to the steering wheel audio controls? I find it annoying that I can change the track on a CD from the steering wheel, but I can't change from one CD to another in the changer from there. What's up with that? Is there a way to turn the radio on and off from the steering wheel? I am thinking that there are some button combos or double taps or something I am missing.

- My LS has 65000 miles on it. Are the plugs in the car rated for 100,000 miles or should I be thinking about changing them now? The car runs fine, but I am a replace it before it runs like crap type of person. Anything strange about changing plugs on this car if I do need to (Remember, we are talking V6 here).

- Last one, thanks for the patience. Has anyone done any bolt on adds to get some more HP out of the V6? I don't want nitrous or a turbo (yet), just curious about bolt on stuff.

It is on the passenger side, rear of the engine compartment. You have to remove all of the plastic cowling just below the wind shield.

Sorry but from what I recall it is what it is.

Yes it is a high mileage tune up car but you will likely have to replace the pcv valve tubing sooner or later so if you decide to do the plugs you might want to plan for a little more labor and 75cents worth of rubber tubing

Only bolt ons are exhaust and air intake. You might want to start with the xcal2 pcm tunes contact torrie at fastpartsnetwork.com

I would suggest getting a copy of the shop manual or subscribing to alldatadiy.com if you intend on doing work on your own car.

I found the ebay manual to be a real heap. Go for the hard copy or better yet just subscribe to alldatadiy.com. I have the book if you are a paper copy kind of guy but I genuinely love alldatadiy.com and would urge you to consider it first.
 
Also, I think you can download the owner manual off of the motorcraft.com website. I recall getting a copy from there back on 05.

You can go to the LVC here, and click on the tech articles, and go to the LS section, and click on the appropriate year...

there's no book for the 2000 model year in the tech section. but I'd think that you could use one of the other year's books.

When in Austin? What is going on? I missed the memo about the TPS report coversheet and the Austin deal. No... wait, I got the TPS REport Coversheet memo but if you could resend it to that would be greaaaaaaat.

Motorcraft.com has a really good online book as well. The subscription is 99 for a year and inscludes lots of wiring diagrams, all the service manual stuff, notes on tsbs and recalls.

I signed up for the one month deal last night just to check it out and it is definitely very nice.

Don't use rubber hose, thats the reason it breaks in the first place. Get emissions system or fuel hose. Costs a little extra but wont dry rot from exposure to oil vapors.

And change the plugs anyway, even if they are good for 100k, it doesn't hurt to keep them fresh.

Agreed on both accounts. I bought some heavy duty tubing at autozone and it was still less than a dollar and 1/4 the price of the Ford OE replacement part. I did all the plugs, coils, egr, the tube, gaskets and something else and it was still waaaaaay cheaper than taking it to the dealer.
 
Where is the EGR valve on the V6? I'm going to do plugs and stuff before I leave on vacation, so I might as well get it all done.

*sigh* I love driving this car....but I am so sick of what parts cost and how hard it is to do ANYTHING on this car.

Seriously Ford....a car you have to take off the entire frickin intake off to change the plugs? $85 EGR valve? It's no wonder they are losing money left and right. With retards like they have working for them in the design end of things, it's amazing they have made it this far.

Well - I know this doesn't make it feel better - but remember - the $45k LS was competing with BMWs. Price out a EGR valve on a BMW..
 
Yeah, I know you are right. I guess if you don't like to pay the price to maintain an nice car, then don't buy one in the first place. I just don't get what could possibly justify that kind of money for a EGR valve! Every other car that I have owned that had one cost 1/10 the price. Is there gold inside? A little midget that opens and closes it for me? An rubber seal compound stolen from aliens that landed here and the government covered it up?

That all being said, I wouldn't trade this car for anything...except maybe a V8 model :D

On average, car manufacturers make more money on servicing a vehicle then they do on the original sale. So... The harder it is to work on, the less people will be willing to do the work themselves, and the more they can charge in labor (because they charge by the hour).

Tha price for parts is generaly higher because not meny people are working on there own cars, so part manufacturers dont have a big market for parts for our cars, so the dealer can charge more.

From a business standpoint, it's actually a good idea (for them, sucks for us).
