ok guys im a tad upset here with the Mark that I just bought. I bought it with a misfire and that was my wrong, but the car was running strong and I figuered spark plugs and coils would do the job. Now for the bad part of the story. Today I went to change the plugs, and guess what!! I have oil in the plugs, oil on the coils and those coils and plugs seem like they havent been changed in centuries. I replaced the 4 plugs on the passenger side and all of them were soaked in oil. Also the rubber boots broke apart so I had to replace 2 of them with 2 extra coils that I had from my LS. I already went ahead and ordered the valve cover gaskets from Max....in which he gave me a great deal. Also will be replacing all 8 coils along with the valve cover gaskets and o-rings for the plugs. I figured a complete tune up will get this fixed. Im praying for the best. How would I know if its the dreaded valve springs?

I wouldn't worry man.... if you found what you found I would say that is the problem....

VCG's are kinda a bitch but very doable... I'm just you could pay Jamie to do it if you are close enough to him...

Yep I am sure you found the problem.
You could always do a compression test as long as your doing the gaskets and plugs and coils if your worried.
If you had a bad spring it would make some bad noise.

its that noise when the car first starts up? if it is its a drain back issue my 94 had the same problem

Its doesnt make any noises its just missfiring big time. Its goes away after you take off but you can still feel the shaking of the engine. The engine turns right on all the time with no issues. Also what do you mean by a drain back issue?

I just heard in MarkVIII.org that the problem with the valve springs was fixed after the 95 model so im pretty sure thats not the problem here.

also think of putting in new plug insert threads. Mike 94m5 had the taps and heli-coils. i think he loaned it out but drop him a pm and check it out. will save you a headach later on. with high mileage and not changeing plugs make sure the threads are good you only have about 3 to3.5 full threads holding the plugs in. jd

The problem YOU are having right now is............

The gaskets that seal the plug tower are leaking. This causes oil to build up in the bores, and cause a pretty bad misfire, along with VERY rapid degredation of the boot rubber.

EASY to fix.

Advance auto sells the felpro kit for just under 90 bucks for both sides.

To much oil drains back into the pan and you get timing chain rattle on start up.

It's not neccessarily a problem. 93-95 had weaker valvesprings that can have problems but it's usually from abuse. 96 and up went to the Cobra style beehive springs.

This comment is a little misleading.

It's not a problem of too much.....oil draining back. It's a problem of PRESSURIZED oil draining out of the hydraulic chain tensioners after shut down. This causes the chains to slacken overnight, and once started backup.........it takes a moment for the oil pressure to re-tension the chains.

I can't remember which part number oil filter solves this problem but there is oneout there with an anti-drain back valve in it.

I don't think it was misleading just oversimplified since I was busy at work. I hate it when I have to much actual work to do at work and don't have time for LVC.

DAMN you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Workin' too hard and S H I T. :D

No worries, I just wanted to get the correct reason out there. For the uninformed.

Guys in a few days im going to be changing the valve cover gaskets im going to be putting new plugs and new coils. But now im a little worried b/c whenever i turn on the car it sounds like a diesel. Im not sure if its an exhaust leak, or if the engine is knocking. Could the engine be knocking b/c of the oil soaked plugs??? Im pretty sure that when I take out the new spark plugs that I installed they will be oil soaked again. What do you guys think.

guys the car is running like a dream. I changed the passenger side valve cover gasket, did the plugs and coils and changed the oil with the 820-s filter and the car is great. It runs like a champ. No more engine shutter no more vibrations and no more noises. I want to thank all of you for your time and great advice.

i intend to trust me. next is new front air bags, color match the chrome for that LSC look, then some nice wheels (speedstars maybe) and some Dynomax bullets with silencer delete and more.
