My LS has been pretty good to me the last couple years, but lately I have noticed a metallic clunking/creaking noise from the front end while under moderate to hard braking. The noise only occurs when the vehicle gets below 5-10 mph. I don't hear it while driving at speeds greater than that or going over bumps...only when coming to a stop.

In the link below, the sound can be heard in the video at just after 26 seconds and again after 39 seconds.

Any ideas? Sway bar bushings, ball joints, tie rods?

On another note, I have had a sound from the rear end for a that is a dull creaking while going over large bumps. Any ideas on that one as well?

Thanks in advance.

I would check that all the bolts in the brakes are tight.. It's super hard for me to hear what's going on because of the wind

do your brake pads have the anti rattle clips and hardward firmly in place?

You can hear it in seconds 27 & 28 and again at seconds 41 & 42...unfortunately it's faint in the video, but it's more noticeable in person especially with the windows down. I'll reshoot either tomorrow or this weekend with the windows up and repost.

The best way I can describe it is an irregular, dull metallic clunk/click/creak that lasts maybe 2 seconds as the car's weight shifts under harder braking. It doesn't do it under light braking such as pulling into a parking space, and doesn't do it over bumps (although I do get sounds from the rear over bumps). First thing I thought when I heard it is that something sounds dried out and needs lubricating. I never heard it until about a month ago as the weather started to climb above freezing. The last week or so it has been mild and I have noticed it more often.

pull your wheels and look at the rotors, I had the same noise and oly while slowing down. My rotors were trash because the inside brake pads were toast, and didn't have the squeelers to let me know about it.

Looks like I have the same noise. I would describe mine as a creak when slowing down and stopping, only at low speeds <40km/h (25 mph). But then again, my rotors are warped and I need a complete brake job all around.

Im also having the same issue and im leaning more towards the end links.

Could be a lot of things. Sway bar bushings, sway bar end links, etc.

I know that I had a creak when going over certain bumps. Replacing my end links (Moog from RockAuto) fixed it.

THREAD JACK WARNING

I get a groaning sound out of the right front wheel when I'm stopped and push the pedal to the floor. It will also do this when stopping slowly and almost stopped. It sounds like a cable binding in it's sheath. I have replaced all the brake hardware and put "anti-squeal grease" between the pad and shim and the shim and caliper. It's only the one corner and there is no squealing.

Ideas?

I had more time to investigate and get additional video today. I also bought a jack stand set so I could do some prodding underneath; I'm not very mechanically inclined but I am learning as I go.

The brake pads are getting thin in the front and the rotors are starting to groove a little, so I'm guessing that is the source of the clicking sound I'm hearing. The LS lug nuts are a pain in the rump to get off...I took a 19 mm socket and had to tap it on with a mallet. I ended up mangling up a couple of the chrome covers in the process. Every time I go to get my snow tires put on they complain about the lug nuts...now I see why.

As for the creaking/clunking, there is a distinct metal clunk that I am hearing more often. I can recreate it by just sitting down hard in the car. It's definitely in the front, but I'm not sure what side it is coming from.

And here are a couple videos from driving. In the first one, the creaking can be heard at 4-5 seconds (can't hear much the rest of the video). In the second, I had my girlfriend drives while I filmed and you can hear a couple clunks as she comes to a stop. In the third, she went into reverse and you hear a clunking while the car is both reversing and stopped.

I didn't have a whole lot of time to look around underneath, but I did find the end links. I tried giving them a good pull and they seemed firm...if they need replacing I'd assume there would be some play. I didn't see the sway bar bushing, but I'm assuming that plastic cover needs to be removed to get to it.
