Mark VIII Catalytic Converter problem?

I have a 94 Mark that I bought last year, and my mechanic said that he thinks I have a small leak in my Catalytic Converter, as it has a weird "air" sound coming from it--(Hard to explain the sound)- My question for the group is--Is this common? If so, will buying a replacement Catalytic Converter fix this? The car has newer exhaust (flowmaster) so I figured it was just a loose clamp or something- Any tips would be appreciated! I have the same issue on my 94 on the passenger side cat the casting is cracked and well ford wants $1500 and 5 weeks to locate one so i live with my little noise...
 
Yes, that is what I am thinking too. I have found some Cat Converters online for about $400, and prob another $300 for my mech to do the work--Not really worth it considering that it still sounds mean, and performs fine. Have you lost any performance as time goes by?
 
I was actually thinking about that---WI doesnt check if the CATS are still on when we re-sell anyway. Any performance increase/decrease?
 
Why not just weld it? If it's the 3rd cat then it's eay to replace, If it's the 2 forward cats then ???. They are kinda hard to get at. I would not remove your cats though. As I have said over & over again, You won't gain any power on a stock engine & your exhaust will stink!
 
Yeah i can't cut off way to loud...the little noise does sound a little mean more annoying though...but i can still creep by so its livable...400 is prob universal then someone still has 2 rebend a new pipe and weld it and theres not much room...

You will gain power on a stock engine, and your exhaust will not stink (keep in mind cars didn't have cats before the mid 70s anyway.) The power gain isn't going to be much, but it's wrong to say no gain.

Indeed. Both of my other cars are non cat models from the factory. (in Britain, cars produced before 93 were not required to have cats) Both run well, have low emissions and clean exhausts. In fact, i have noticed that some cat equipped cars produce a horrible rotten eggs smell. (sulphur)
 
Your exhaust will smell rich. Go ahead & take those cats off & see if there is a difference in the smell. I took the cats off of a 1988 bronco II that I had. That exhaust was horrible once I took them off, & it lost low end power for sure! I put em back on & it was gone. I have gutted several mustangs as well, Same thing. Pull up behind some old boat without emissions & you will know. Sure, Some engines may gain power, some will suffer from low end power loss.

Are you certain that it's your cat that's leaking & not your EGR tube? Might be worth checking it out.
 
I am not sure...It seems like it is coming from that area on the car. I will look over it, and maybe when summer comes I will pull it off, and give it a try. THanks all!
 
Thats the weird thing, the guy who owned it right before me did the Dual Exhaust--Flowmaster all the way back- Sounds Bad A$$! It just has the CHEE CHEE sound at times-- Owell, I still love it!
 
I really thought that my front cat was leaking as well, I even got the stethoscope out & tried to listen for the leak. It was the EGR tube on mine. Kinda a paai to change out but easier than a cat. If it is the cat & it's just a small crack you might be able to weld it. That sound can be VERY annoying!

118 octane in a mark? anything done to it? I have ran the 100 octane before & it does smell good!
 
Thanks all! I will have to check out the ERG tube...Would this cause the engine to eventually run rough? My engine has been sluggesh lately> See thread "That chuggin engine of mine"
 
well there are tests that can be done, they can blow a small hole aft cat and check the pressure by the rush of hot gas coming out.

same for all the cats, too much backpressure and not enough air rushing out is a cloged cat.
