How can I get this pump off to replace it? The book procedure gets me to the 20mm high pressure line fitting, but the frame and pulley(among other things) are in the way in order to get the short wrench,or any other , on it with a good angle or room to pull.

when you find out

let us know! the 3 long bolts can be reached from underneath the pump with a small 1/4 ratchet. That big 20mm nut on the line, only comes off for a lucky few. Most are jack hammered on. I would suggest making a custom impact socket with a cut out for the line, then use a impact drill to loosen the damn thing. I cut my hose to get the pump off, then still had to use an impact wrench to loosen the 20mm nut. They must put some locktite on the treads or something similar to keep it from coming loose. I hate it!

Wow. I cant wait until I have problems with mine.

God I hope so.... Mine should love me--it was a theft rescue! Thats like getting a puppy from the animal shelter right?

If you are talking V8 -
drop the belt, pull the alternator, drain the fan fluid

for the pump itself:
- there are four bolts holding it on - one in each corner.
- the bottom two are easy to get to
- the top back bolt (closest to the firewall) is easy once you swing the actuator out of the way - it just spins.
- the top front bolt (closest to the grill) is tough. You get a 10mm gear wrench and get behind the hose to reach the top of the bolt. then back it off enough to push the head of the bolt tightly against the hose - trapping your wrench in place.
- then using a 10mm socket - simply work each of the other three bolts back a little bit, then go back to the top-front one - loosen it a bit more, and repeat. You basically work them all off a bit at a time together.

- this is more importantly when trying to reinstall - since the top-front bolt is to long to fit with the pump in place, you have to turn it in and work the pump up into place.

Once the pump is off then you can remove the hose from the fan (pain) and then pull the pump (with hose attached) out of the car, swap the hose and put it all back in place.
