I drive a 2000 Lincoln LS 3.9L V8 when i started my car in cold weather it would wind up and make a sort of belt noise, so then my dad and i added more coolant and it stopped winding up in the cold weather. the next day i got home parked my car and got out and smelt antifreeze. i opened the hood and it was smoking from the coolant reservoir. so we stopped the winding up noise and now its smoking. Note: The car was not overheating and the heat was working great at the time. Thanks:

First things first...

The coolant reservoir is on the driver's side at the base of the windshield. It should only have coolant (50/50 mix of anti-freeze and distilled water) added to it.

The hydraulic cooling fan reservoir is at the front passenger side of the engine. It should only have Mercon ATF added to it.

Now, assuming you put the right fluid in the right reservoir...

That's not smoke, it's steam. Your degas bottle (coolant reservoir) has cracked and is leaking and not holding pressure. It will have to be replaced. This is a very very common LS problem. One you replace it, the cooling system will have to be correctly filled and bled. Here's how.

I assume that by "belt noise" you really meant fan noise.

Quinn, Being as you are new here I'll give you your first tip to a long and happy membership here at LVC.

Use the search feature when you have an issue to see if your problem is one of the 2 largest issues for these vehicles. You see in those cases your post won't be just another of the same old questions asked. There are several VERY knowledgable members here and they have given very detailed answers on these well known problems. But after several years and 100's of new post about that common issue the responces, sugestions and answers become one sentence answers and not as much help as researching the original post.

In your case the ENTIRE cooling system is troublesome as it ages. Very detailed post of part numbers, tips and diagrams have already been posted for you all at your fingertips.
Today was your fist day as a member here, please take the time and read, there is 6 months of well written tips here and enjoy your car!

When joegr speaks you listen!

Seriously though, he knows exactly what he is talking about, and I would feel comfortable betting sums of money on his diagnosis being correct.
