ls axles vs mark viii axles

so I got to thinking this afternoon ...I know....sounds dangerous lol
but this is what I was thinking. what would be stopping us from doing an axle and front hub conversion? we already know the differentials can be swapped in some cases.
so I guess what I'm looking for is information on the axles themselves.
and the other idea was to remove the studs from my ls axles and hubs, weld those holes completely and re drill them in a different pattern.

thoughts and suggestions?
 
What are you wanting to accomplish? The axles are on the opposite end from the front hub, so that is confusing, and the bolt pattern is the same between the Mark VIII and the LS which is what it sounds like you want to change?
 
Lol wow. see I said it was dangerous for me to be thinking.I had it in my head that the mark 8 was a 5x114.3 pattern. but I guess that wouldn't make sense since they swap them with mustang/cobra parts.
so swapping them out wouldn't do me any good.
okay scratch that idea.
what do you think of the other idea?
has anyone ever tried or heard of doing that?
 
You might be able to have them drilled.. Idk what they do over there.. I can't remember.. I would asked questions on their side
 
we swap out all four hubs out with mustang stuff.
use the mustang brakes and calipers and such.
mostly bolts right on.
 
So apparently I just need to figure out if the cobra parts will bolt up to the ls like they do on the mark.
I wish I had thought of this sooner! I had all four hubs from an ls I was parting out and I recently got rid of them. I would have been more apt to weld and try to redrilll those spare hubs. now I would have to put money into Something I'm not sure would work out

Hey think of all the people before you that had to do that because stuff wasnt available, ideas have to start somewhere... unfortunatly they never get far from that, an idea
 
'8' to LS

The entire center section from an '8' will go into an LS although it requires some degree of fabrication for mountings.
I'm under the impression that the axles (half-shafts) are huskier on the '8' and that there's some degree of variance in length.
The hubs might well be swappable. This would aid in a bolt-circle change.
I'd be very interested in any input regarding these assumptions

Yes you guys are right. it just would have been a lot easier with a spare set to work with.
speaking of acting and not just talking...I may finally have some pictures of my stroker kit this weekend :D

If the hubs are swappable that would open up a whole new world of wheels for us to choose from...IF.....so who wants to find out ;)
 
Anyone know which mustang hubs they use?
are they from a mustang or a cobra?
I'm assuming the rear hubs would have to come from a 99 - 04 cobra send those had IRS setups.
I could make a new thread in the 'mark' section but hopefully one of those guys will see this and help us out.
 
lol you got me fast! I'll have to do that when I get home. at the moment I'm in the service truck driving in rush hour traffic so that probably wouldn't be the safest idea.
getting off topic a little bit ....I love my new phone! it's an htc evo and One of the handy features is the speak to text option :)
 
so I'm thinking that even if the hubs are not swappable it shouldn't be a problem to go with my other idea of welding those holes and re drilling The ls hubs. it would take some time but I could do that myself.

if you do that just be super careful and make sure the holes are dead on, if they get off center your wheels whont fit and will be off balance. You also don't wanna have to weld and drill more than once if at all, it's just kind of an iffy project.

I would be all about finding different hubs that would fit our cars with some modification. But hey like i said someone has to go for it, I'm also not the greatest welder so just my two cents..
