Loud POP sound coming from rear when put in reverse?

backlash in the rear end could be off.

Can you expline in more detail and is there a fix? This showed up a couple years ago after my tranny was rebuilt. I just replaced all shocks and bags and looked over the rear end control arms and it all looked still intact.

I think what he is referring to is the play or distance between the rear gears. the backlash is what keeps your gears from grinding the teeth off from too much or too little friction. Same concept as setting slack on a motorcycle chain. To much slack and the chain will strip the teeth on the gears or bend them and if too tight then it will break them off the gear from the added stress. There needs to be a lil distance or play between them a good mechanic can set the backlash by moving shims in the rear dif to get what is appropriate. This is not hard just need proper tools and time.

ring gear blacklash can be a pain but did you check the tranny mounts?

My Crown Vic has made a loud banging sound when I put it in reverse about three times since I've owned it... still no idea why.

If this started AFTER you've had the driveshaft off, you might want to double check the 4 mounting bolts on the drive line to pinion shaft flange. Could be the transmission mechanic didn't tighten those bolts to specs. They have to be REALLY tight.

Can you send a pic of exactly where you are talking about, maybe a red circle on the area?

Lol... your asking Frogman to be that helpful lol...

This is the best picture I have...

my car did this not long ago- it was the rear diff mount- the rubber that holds it together had completely detached letting the diff thunk around. unfortunately not made by ford anymore, but i found one used and it fixed my problem.

Jeff please look at the pic above in the frame from Kustomizing kid and tell me if the rubber you are referring to is under the bolts with the red circle in the pic?

No it is on the back of the rear- you can just barely start to see the bracket in the top left of that picture- it goes into a big U-shaped bracket that is held to the car, which has rubber in between- that rubber can tear as mine did.

That diff needs some seals.............

Further explanation please my diff. is totally dry on the outside, so there is nothing that has ever leaked out of it, assuming these are the seals you are talking about? This noise started after a tranny rebuild?

I was just talking about that picture.

Your still running the stock two piece driveshaft correct? May be the joint where the two pieces are pressed together.

But more realisticaly, it's the back lash in the ring gear/pinion combo.

Yes to all how does one get the back lash adjusted if that is it?

I finally got under rear end and those nuts were so tight I coudn't tighten them anymore.
So where else do I look?

best way to check, is to lift the back end up (air ride off) with the car in park and rock the rear tires back and forth in the same direction at once, now theres gonna be some slop in the trans backlash etc then give it a good shove and see if the diff moves a good amount. thats how i checked mine and it needed the 4 front bushings, the rear mount can also go bad. mine would also clunk if i let off the gas and hit it lightly again while crusing at low speed

Could also be your driveshaft U joint retaining clips.. if one of them came out or broke, you would definately get a clunk.. but i would think you would have a lot more issues if that was the case.. just a thought!

If a u joint cap worked its way out the car would be undriveable... it would clunk and vibrate like hell.
