Looking to purchase a chip for my Mark VIII

Im interested in getting a chip for my Mark VIII but im not sure whether to get an actual chip or just the plug in tuner.

If anyone knows which is better, and or what brand and where to buy from that would help me out a lot thanks

do you have a 98?
a tuner is better. especially one that has real time data logging.
 
XCal II. Used for about $100 but it MUST be unlocked. People may tune their car then try to sell the tuner! But once a car is tuned to it, its tied together until the tuner is programmed to return the car to stock. That way the tuner can not be passed around to 100 cars. Kinda sucks, but protects the company.

With a laptop, you can live data read while driving. As I did. And if you get the Pro Racer software, you can really dig into tuning every little bit. Such as when the fan comes on and off, etc.

Now with a chip you have to find someone to flash it. And if you make any changes, you have to have it done again. I have a chip that I am selling, but its really for someone who plans to make some changes then get a tune set. Then after, make no changes.
 
more hp, torque, shift points, shift firmness, rev limiter, speed limiter, torque converter lock up, blah blah blah.

Sorta, it helps you fine tune the engine to squeeze out the most performance or economy, or a little of both if done right.

You need to know what you are doing. If you dont, you can destroy the engine.

Anybody whose "old school" knows you used to advance your distributor (bump up the timing) to get a little more pep. Usually, that's how a tune for your ECM gives you a few ponies. Advances the timing a bit. Obviously, this increases your chance for spark knock which DEFINITELY can and has ruined numerous engines.

The bonus with the computer-controller vehicles, you can regulate the air-fuel mixture. Richer is safer when messing with timing.
 
thanks for the help guys every bit of knowledge helps, definately dont want to mess up my engine so some guidance would be nice or some more pointers. I work at Mercedes Benz and i have a master certified mechanic that works on my car and he has worked for ford before so i trust him, i believe he can install it without screwing anything up.

delta force sniper programmer. available at lincolnmotorsport.com i have it and they have great support and website forums people trade tuning programs, etc. i wanted help with tune specifics it took a little while, but got it done. it does everything.
 
nothing will gain as much a a chip and a custom tune done on a dyno. all the hand helds are nothing more than a Mail order tune that gets it in the ballpark

EXACTLY. I'm getting a dyno this winter and will never go back to mail-order tunes again. What an epic fail.
 
my mail order tune from blue oval chips is pretty wicked. chirping third every now and again.
drives much better too.
not all mail order tunes are created equal. some are better than others.

how much was your mail order tune &was it a straight plug & play or did you have to have more done to it?
 
I'm with the two guys that said a "dyno tune", if you want the best for your particular ride. Like someone else said, a mail order tune is a "cookie cutter" and will work just fine, but a tune with YOUR CAR on a dyno is about as good as it gets.

What does that run, guys? I thought I saw somewhere someone offered dyno tunes for $100 if you already had an Xcal2 or 3.

yes they are, what you are missing is as good as it may run it would run better if a custom tune

theres nothing better than a "custom "tune, partidcularly because its tailored to your car. but if you get a tune before you upgrade your exhaust, intake,gears injectors, whatever, you need a retune. chips are tailor made to what you have in your car, programmers can upgrade on the fly, AND be used for dyno tuning as well all things considered,if you have access to a dyno for tuning theres no question its the best if you have a bunch of upgrades already then you can immediately see the results, it depends what you have.
