Lincoln ls Alternator

I just had my alternator rebuilt. $312.00 in less than 24hrs.

I had my Alternator replaced Last Friday at Firestone. They charged me $425.00 total.
The Labor was $100.00. The New Alternator was $340.00.

2002 LINCOLN LS V8 (3.9L)

Firestone ordered the Alternator from Carquest Auto Parts (Part#8256AN). I had an idea what
price a (New) Alternator would cost me out the door if I bought it directly from any autoparts store in
my area (Autozone, Oreilly's, Napa, etc...). But, I didn't want to have to search for a "Local" mechanic
who "may" or "may not" have problems due to either bitch bolts, especially since it's removed from the
bottom of the car vs. through the hood. The Carquest Alternator online is priced at $268.00..

Also, Firestone told me they wouldn't install any parts that I purchased myself. Which would've
saved me about $75.00. Luckily at least I got a $45.00 Military Discount. It's almost a week and
I haven't seen any "dummy lights" pop-up. So that's kool.

Also important was I did my own Diagnostic and told them to just replace the Alternator.
So if you happen to go to Firestone, they "might" charge you for a Diagnostics Check ??
If someone has any specifications, info, or prior problems with the Carquest Alternator, Let us know.
I'll do the same...So far so good.

Where in San Diego??

I hope you got a warranty on parts and labor as the alternator won't last long.

Where in San Diego ?? (...which? Firestone, Carquest, or Me ??)

The Firestone, was the one in National City. There is a warranty for both Parts and Labor since they provided both.
I have never known of any shops who's ASE Certified, then provides the parts, then installs those parts, then tell the customers there is
no NO warranty whatsoever. But, as far for how long the warranty is ?? I can't remember specifically, but it's on the back of my Service
ticket/paperwork for the Alternator.

LS4me, what's the info you have for either Firestone or that specific Alternator from Carquest ??
As of today, this was my first major issue/problem (where I spent over +$400 to fix something), and I've had my 2002 LS since 2009. Let me know...if you got info about Firestone or Alternator specs?? Nice to know...

Thanks

The general experience here is that non-OEM alternators do not work for long on the gen I LS.

I'm gonna contact Carquest for info for that Alternator. Will post specifications if I come up w/ any.

"OPEN QUESTION FOR ALL", If you had to get a car up and running, and if your choices were the local
Autoparts chains in your towns (Autozone, Oreilly's, NAPA, Carquest, Advance,etc....). Which would
the majority of "us" LS Owners go to for that part ?? Taking into consideration it's your daily
car to get to and from work ??

I've never limited myself to those choices. I use FordPartGiant and Tasca mail order for most of my parts. If I didn't have those choices, NAPA and O'Reilly's would be my first local choices.

Man! That brings back so many memories I wanna cry. I used to go to Firestone on Highland back in the 80's. I must have bought about a dozen XP 2000 Gs from there for the late night races. Highland was the cruising spot on the south side of Dego. I fell in love with a National City Cop I met at the Car Wash on 2nd. She was a 6 footer and absolutely gorgeous. It broke my heart when I lost track of her.

Sorry for the tangent. I got my factory unit rebuilt by a starter and alternator shop that specializes in that type of work. It was just under $150 for the rebuild and $175 for labor + tax and then there was a 10% senior discount. I never got any indication there was a problem before the hard starting and check AdvanceTrac.
