Leaking thermostat housing

I took apart my thermostat housing again today (did once yesterday). Put it back together with another new o-ring. It is dripping about 1 drip every 10 seconds. I torqued it on to 7 ft-lbs. Is there anything I'm missing? If I put rtv all around the seal could that stop the drip? I'm open for ideas. I broke the drive off my 3/8 craftsman ratchet breaking the screws on the housing yesterday (I think they were on much tighter than they should have been. I broke the drive off 2 craftsman 1/4 drive ratchets trying to open the crossover before going to a pair of vice grips. Any advice on what to do here would be appreciated.
 
I've always thought sealers are specifically NOT supposed to be used on parts of the cooling system. I don't know when I got that idea or who put that in my head, but I've always been fine without it!
 
I thought you were talking about the crossover when you wrote that...

Anyway, you might want to go to your local parts place and try to find a thermostat housing gasket that fits the pipe.

If anything you could cut one to fit.

If nothing else you can use the dividers out of a multi-subject notebook (the notebooks with hard pressed dividers, not the construction paper type of dividers). Lay a piece over your work piece, tap the edges with the butt end of a screwdriver, cut on the lines, voila.

At my parents house we've been running the same material that we got from the paper plant for various gaskets for years. One being a D-7 caterpillar head gasket that pulls an 80' wide disc through the field every year.
 
He was talking about the crossover and the thermostat housing. I usually prefer to fill my car back up too after i remove half the coolant [my customers especially like that]. DER! Double o-ring, are you serious? do not do that. Take it apart and inspect for cracks around both pieces. It is also fine to add a little rtv on the o-ring [I do this a lot], just coat it enough to barely squish out, but I repeat do not double gasket stuff, it just ain't right.
 
You can supplement the gasket with a ring of RTV along the outside ring, where the two halves of the housing meet.
 
are you absolutely sure this is coming from the Tstat housing
(ask KustomizingKid about this..haha)

does this occur when you have the crossover plug in place?

because that is the exact path coolant that dribbles out of the crossover follows as it goes to the ground.

if the crossover plug is in and it's leaking, then disregard.
 
Do not double oring... that is a terrble idea that will only compound your problems...

Seriously though if the crossover cap is out you might have coolant leaking down dripping off the housing... I may have experienced this personally...
 
I gave it another shot and it's still leaking. The crossover cap isn't the source, I'm positive. Upon inspection of the housing at a shop a buddy of mine works for, we discovered the problem. The previous owner had most of the cooling system replaced. The housing had cracks in it and that is why it wasn't sealing it correctly. The reason I such a hard time getting the thermostat out the first time is because instead of replacing the housing, the last owner just glued the whole thing together. This wasn't obvious until I inspected the housing outside of the car. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
