not street legal...

did you do the other side as well?
did you just plug the intake connector?
 
the passenger side does as well - smaller tube since it's at a higher velocity closer to the throttle-body
 
Do you think it will help performance? It looks like it would help keep warm air out of the intake . You could always hook it back up when you get your car inspected.
 
I would do the passenger side - right now.

The reason - both sides can flow to each other - in fact, I believe in the Gen2 they only have the driver's side vented.

But since you still have the passenger side connected - the intake is still drawing fumes out of the valve cover, and then drawing from the driver's side as well, and then pulling in some un-metered air from that filter, through the crankcase, and into the intake....

so it's not a bad deal if you don't care about being street legal, but do both sides!!!
 
i actually broke that hose when i was doing my intake lol. I started with a breather filter fix...but since i broke a bit off of the peice on the valve cover it would never stay on.

I found rubber ummm...i dont know what they are. they came off of a step ladder we had in the garage :lol: they make it so the legs didnt slide around. i dunno, fit perfect though. so thats been my fix!

So, you actually capped it off instead?
 
yea i capped it off. at both the intake and the valve cover. i dont see what its gonna hurt!

bad idea. The valve cover needs to be able to release excess pressure - if not you'll start blowing valve cover gaskets, pushing oil into spots where it should not be....
 
that makes no sense then lol. your saying its bad to have a breather filter and its bad to have it capped. i also dont see how having a breather filter lets in un metered air. your valve train doesnt have an air intake.

Hows this...ill make a pin hole sized hole in my cap. or do you have the flow rate down as well? ( just busting your balls with that comment ). My car did just blow its valve cover gaskets though. but it was both sides. id imagine if it was that important the drivers side thats capped wouldve blown way faster.

Hes not saying the breather valve is necessarily bad if you do both sides. What he is saying is its best to have both on and the intake capped where the line would be.

The line on the intake would get un-metered air!


It makes total sense!


All in all its unnecessary for fuel injected cars. Its something more common on carborated cars. Isn't it?
 
dude - go back through 50 of your last posts.

you have had issue after issue, 1/2 of the time you where actually trying to fix something else.

we all learn by doing, that's cool (god knows I've made lots of mistakes) - but IMHO you need to read more / post less - if you really want to learn. If you don't understand - ask - but that's not how your posts read.

maybe i just dont understand what your saying, intake manifold or intake tube. and how would it get un metered air when its capped. obviously that means it would have to suck air in, if its sucking air in, how is it also going to cause valve cover gaskets to go bad? it would have to be outward pressure....I dont think anyone on this forum is stupid enough to take that line off, put a breather filter on it and not cap the side on the intake. Its just making no sense to me. if that line sucks air in...its getting un metered air...if it pushes air out...its getting un metered air.

And as far as me having problems i didnt understand...my car managed to confuse 2 service shops and atleast 10 ASE certified mechanics, this whole forum, and obviously me.

Quik LS...there was a reason i said what i did in parenthesis. its called joking around.
 
Crankcases build pressure - and you have to let that pressure out. Hence the PCV.

Our V8 do not use a PCV - unlike most cars, it's highly engineered to have just the right size hose from valve cover to intake to promote the right vacuum at the air stream velocity to vent the pressure. If we had actual valves - this would be simpler - but we don't.

The issue with only doing one side is:
- you vent one side to the atmosphere.
- the other side is still attached to the intake. The intake creates vacuum as air rushes into the engine. it pulls (sucks) air / pressure form the valve cover - which is what it is suppose to do. But - if the other side is breathing from air (not from the intake after the MAF) the air it 'could' suck in is not measured by the MAF and therefore your engine has no knowledge of this air - can cannot adjust the fuel. You either do both sides, neither side, or place a check valve on the one side you did.

the bigger issue is - if you capped it - you are not allow the pressure to escape. This is bad bad bad. Cars since the 40's have had some sort of breather to allow the pressure to escape. In 1996 - you had to route those escaping gases back into the intake to meet the new tougher emission laws - hence the tubes from the valve covers to the intake.

This is exaggreated for forced induction - both the supercharger and turbos see more crankcase pressure and therefore the PCV becomes more important - however we far exceed the stock engineering - so we have to redesign it.
 
thanks for clearing that up for me.

So basically its hurting emissions if you do a breather on just that side. thats really all it is?

if you get more air than your PCM knows about - you run lean - meaning you hurt your engine.

if you have too much fuel - you are not maximized on power and can hurt your cats.
if you have too much air - the engine actually burns the aluminum - eating itself.

Not to sound like a ass:) but Im sure if you posted that you had the breather capped off someone would have hit the nail on the head and if the problem was not related he would have at least advised you switch it back. Im sure that someone would be the same person explaining it to you in multiple posts in this thread.:)
