Does an OPTIMA battery ever gas?

When used with a properly regulated constant voltage charging system (such as an alternator) the OPTIMA will usually not emit hydrogen gas. However, gassing can occur when charging at higher voltage levels or in extreme high temperature conditions. In automotive applications this typically will not happen if the alternator/regulator stay below 15 volts.

What is a Gel Cell Battery? Is OPTIMA a gel battery?

A gel battery design is typically a modification of the standard lead-acid automotive or marine battery. A gelling agent is added to the electrolyte to reduce movement inside the battery case. Many gel batteries also use one way valves in place of open vents, which helps the normal internal gasses to recombine back into water in the battery, reducing gassing.

An OPTIMA battery is not a "gel" battery or regular flooded acid battery. An OPTIMA is a Spiralcell AGM battery.

AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

A newer type of sealed battery uses "Absorbed Glass Mats", or AGM between the plates. This is a very fine fiber Boron-Silicate glass mat. These type of batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but can take much more abuse.

so. yes it can vent.
no it is not a dry cell. it still has electrolyte in it.
 
I've had a red-top in mine for a little over a year. Hasn't failed me yet. It is not vented which worries me but at first notice I didn't see a place to even attach the stock vent tube to it.

You can put the battery in the stock location. It's smaller than the stock battery. The Optima will come with blocks to shim it in place then strap it in. Unfortunately the strap for mine snapped when I tried loosening the nut and since then my battery's just been sitting in there. Nothing's gone wrong but it needs fixing.

BTW I think if you were replacing your battery go with a red-top. Second battery look for the yellow. I believe the red has more cranking amps but the yellow is more well suited for an audio application. Just from quickly reading other stuff online.

well based on your two comments, i would have to agree that says his background/education/experience has giving him a lot more knowledge about batteries than your has. his has a little science to back it up.


also why do we pay close to a couple hundred bucks to buy optima's when we could just throw a fist full of size D batteries in the trunk?

well you are correct there, a "D" battery is in the shape of a cylinder, just like the cylinders that make up a optima
 
All you need it just a $50 sealed battery box and then you can put a 24 or 27 size battery in there of your liking. You could use one of the cheap $10 plastic ones, just need some way to loosely seal it for venting.

We used to just have a sheet metal guy bend us up a box and lid out of 16-ga aluminum for a 6-pack and $20. Then cut all our own holes in it for whatever we were doing.

Just toss it under the hood and bungie it to the ABS system. Then you have less travel for your big3 upgrade.

So does every car with a trunk battery have a vent system??

And a battery can explode at anytime.. I was in a vehicle with a battery that just decided to pop under the hood while parked. Never been overcharged and only a couple years old.

That happened to a Sable we once owned. The lid on the battery just blew off, spewing fluid (acid) all over the place. Fortunately I was able to get some water on it before the acid did any real damage. The other good thing is we were at the mall and they had a Sears close by. We bought the battery and, as were weren't far from Sears, the guy came over and changed it out.

yep. had the transmission in my mark out last year so it was sitting at home, hood up and such, came home from school and the battery was lying all over the driveway. it was an old battery, but still.

Guy I knew back in the dot-boom days bought a VW mini bus and was restoring it so he could relive his hippy youth. Those have a start (standard car battery) and a deep-cycle battery under the rear seat. One of them exploded with enough force that it went through what was left of the battery compartment floor and was being dragged behind the VW on the road by the cables.
