Ported vs sealed.
Ported will always be about 3dbs louder when you have it tuned correctly. Takes up more space.
Sealed, not quite as loud. with the right sub, you get sharper and quicker response. "better clarity". Requires smaller box.

DO NOT port those W7's, if the place that installed them didn't tune them in the sealed box, go get them tuned ASAP. Those things are amazing in sealed boxes.

Your kidding right? Just how do you tune a sealed box?
ok you guys remember i had them in a sealed box right. ok well i busted the seals around the box. so im getting a new box built and they said that there going to put it in a ported box. so i said ok ill try that if it sounds good ill keep it. ok now i called the jl audio rep and he said that i wouldnt tell the difference because its in a trunk. is that so?

The JL w7's are supposed to be in a custom box, I'm almost positive the people he got his car audio done at just threw it in a prefab box. They must use certain specs or those w7's will blow. Not to mention sound like poo. I've worked with many of these subs including JL's w6v2's. There's one local shop in the Chicago area that I know of that does this correctly, Music in Motion. I mean unless where you guys are from EVERYONE does things perfectly, but I know of at least 3 custom audio shops around me that are terrible at this, and they use the same 3 boxes for 30 diff. types of subs.

EDIT: LOL you busted the seals? That's pretty awful, either they are terrible at making enclosures or they bought prefabbed ones. Get at least 3/4" board for those w7's, they push alot of air.
ok i called the shop and he said that it is 3/4 inch thick, and the box is a lot stronger. but the bad news is he said that it was made for some mtx's but hes cutting the box to make it fit for my ls and he said that there are 2 rectangler ports i guess 1 for each speaker?

Tuning a box. You tune a sealed box by the size. Different cubic feet, different sound. Larger the cubic feet, requires less power. too big, will sound like dead air.
Tuning a ported box, just change the size of the hole, size of the tube (length and width). and you can even change the size of the box.
Have your box made to correct specs, or you will be dissappointed. Here let me see if I can help.

I understand that. But if the sealed box was already built you can 't tune it after its built. you can only add tufflex or poly fill to try to help the sound. As far as ported, you tune the box by the port size and length according to how you want it to sound.

Thats what I said. I Thinki know but their building a ported box is what im trying to tell you. that their now making a whole new custom box to jl specs for ported

Norty....when you get your box made, if it is built to JL specs, it should take up almost your entire trunk. If that box is not huge, it was not built to JL specs. I work at a shop that sells JL, if you have any questions PM me. I also have had W7's before.

Oh yeah....and make sure the front panel of the box is about 1.5" thick mdf. Because these subs are very heavy, they tend to bow the front panel of the box over time.
