I have been a critic of people posting about racing on the streets, and i have been guilty of excessive speeds on the highway when its empty on a few occasions, but a new law here seems waaaaay out of line. 50+mph over the speed limit now carries the possibility of 5-10 years prison, 10 year license suspension AND your vehicle confiscated. Now i totally agree that 50+ over the limit is very excessive but losing your ride...prison??? I know Florida has some crazy ass drivers but what the hell???

Yeah, well I think it's great and should be Federal. These stupid people are killing innocent people and themselves. As soon as you work an accident involving a DOA 17 yr old with his paralyzed buddy and fatally-ejected 17 yr old girlfriend. Then have to notify the parents, you'll appreciate the new law. Same thing goes for seatbelt and helmet laws. The general public is too un-educated to protect themselves, so someone has to. California is crushing the cars from streetracers, Great Thing.

This is why we have racetracks.

The law was originally targeting motorcycles but they changed it to include all vehicles. I in no way defend or justify speeding or think it shouldnt go unpunished but my opinion is the punishment is a little harsh considering the crime. I think it should be somewhat relative to the circumstances, 85 mph in a residential 35 mph zone is bad no doubt, but 105 mph on a 55 mph highway isnt exactly comparable considering the average flow of traffic is going about 70 mph. The german autobahn kinda proves that speed alone isnt a deadly factor. You bring up a good point about seatbelts, you can have a small child hopping around the car without a seatbelt and only get a nominal fine, but speeding and your pretty much f*cked. Honestly i dont drive too crazy but i have on several occasions pushed the LS to its limits on an empty highway, but this new law will definately make me think twice about doing that again, so i guess mission accomplished. Unfortunately there are a ton of drivers who dont think that logically.

Im in agreement with the punishments except for the taking your ride stuff. In my eyes no one has the right to confiscate your property. I would rather set my car on fire than let a governing body (or anyone else) take it from me. Just one of those things im 'funny' about. And no, im not much of a speeder, nor do i condone street racing.

I guess i see it like this: The government gave me the privilege of driving on their roads, so by all means they can take that privilege away, but they did not give me my car, so they dont have the right to take it from me - if that makes sense.

They will never enforce a prison sentence.. though, canfiscating your vehicle, and throwing a lot of fines at you, im sure they would be glad to.

Also about the seatbelt and helmet laws, whos life are you putting in danger, besides yourself, if you dont wear a seatbelt/helmet.. its just another way to get more money

Same concept for posting a "For Sale" sign on your car, its illegal in most areas and will result in a fine

I always do wear my seatbelt, and believe me I do think that seat belts save lives, but let me tell you about an experience I had. When I was 22, I was in a terrible car accident as a passenger. I was sleeping and had the belt over my lap, but not my shoulder. The driver of the car I was in, also fell asleep, rolling his car 300 yards into the desert of Nv. I was not thrown from car because of lap belt. BUT, the Dr.'s told my Mom that if I had had the seatbelt over my shoulder, I would be dead. As it was not over my shoulder I was able to slump forward, and as the roof of the car was smashed in, I did not lose my head because I was secured against the seat. This was an aweful accident and I did break my neck severly.
My point is this. Every accident is "different" and what may save lives in one accident, may kill a person in another. By the grace of god, I am ok and was saved. But the knowledge that I would be dead if wearing a shoulder harness, certainly was food for thought.

Regarding 10 year prison sentences, I can't see this law every flying for real. Our prison system is overcrowded to the max, and we can't afford to take care of the prisoners we have already. If anyone ever does spend time in prison for speeding, it will just me another case of space wasted on non-violent offenders............ Just my 2 cents.

I do wear my seat belt always, hope I am never in a accident such as this again, but as I said. Every accident is different.

How many people that lose their license and insurance for traffic offences like racing and DUI are still driving their vehicle; members on this form have admitted to driving without license and insurance.

Driving is not an entitlement it is a privilege.

Injury accidents affects everyone’s cost of insurance.
