I just noticed something on my 97 tonight. I was in the drive through of Taco Bell, and my rpm started surging up and down between 900 and 1000. Soon as I gave a little gas to move forward, the car died. It woud restarted right away, and I had to give a bit more gas in order for it not to die again. Does this mean the IAC needs to be changed? Any ideas?

Sounds like IAC or vacuum leak. If the car was already warn the IAC is less likely, they seem to act bad when they are cold. Keep an eye on it. I just found a vacuum leak on mine, thought it was the IAC.

Found my problem. This bad boy was dry rotted on both sides. A simple $6.00 hose kit cut to size and I was ready to go.

i read this too late. that happened on my 97 and my 98, those two hoses get so soft and crappy they implode on themselves under a load, eventually even at an idle. once they are changed they'll last forever. its very common on the 97-98 motors.

yeah that happened on mine... the dude at checkers just gave me a couple little pieces for free... I was gonna say also clean the IAC just for kicks... I did and man did it change the way the car felt... no more surging... no more shudders... it's smooth... well till I gave it some gas... then I blew my belt... but hey at least it's running like a champ and belts are easy to fix...

what I did to clean it was I took carb cleaner ran it through for a bit till the liquid came out kinda clear... then saturated the area and took pipe cleaners and ran them through... cleaned it nice!... looked almost brand new... but before you put it back I took a little more carb cleaner put it in for a sec lit it on fire and then rinsed it out again... just to make sure there wasn't any pipecleaner fuzzies left in there... it runs great now!
