My friend keeps telling me that the CAI from K&N that dynos at a 15hp increase at 6000 rpm is complete B.S. I am also having a hard time believing that those results are 100% accurate. Does anyone have some good input on this (dyno results done with and without on your car, or possibly just theories you have). I just think 15hp is huge at an under $300 price point.
 
Well I can't say a 15hp gain is definate, also I have a 02 so I have Kens Aluminum intake, but the principle is the same. I definately got a increase in power. Also if you like the idea of hearing your intake snort on hard throttle, you'll love it.
 
I don't see why K&N would lie about something like that when anyone can buy one, dyno it and prove it. I would tend to believe them.
 
Doesnt the K&N test use a T-bird? I know its the same engine and all but its still not the same car. Every car performs differently. I have always put K&N filters in all my cars as i believe in their benefits, but i cant be convinced on the $300 intake. Unless someone can provide (which nobody ever has) a dyno run with a stock intake vs. ANY other intake on the same car within the same day at the same dyno shop then i'll always think its all hype. Regardless of who it is, you cant ever take peoples word on products. They are trying to sell their product and will tell you what you want to hear. So should i believe K&N just because they said so....NO.

P.S. If you dont believe companies provide false or misleading claims just look at the news lately at the multi-million $$ fines to weight loss companies and their products.
 
i think saying that it adds 15hp is using ricer math, but the stock intake on these cars seems to be very restrictive, so i think youd get more of a gain than putting one on another stock car.
 
I wouldn't be bold enough to tell you my ass is a dyno meter... so i won't tell you that "I can tell it helped by the seat of the pants feel"... But it had a nice sound to the intake, and judging by the design of the factory intake system, there's no way it can't make more power. Added benifit... I got 27mpg on the highway last week with just the K&N intake and champion iridiam/platimum plugs

Well congratulations on NOT being a butt dyno guy. I'm sure it changed the sound, taking off the snorkel from the factory setup changed the sound on mine (to my dislike). And the 1st gen. intake with its wrap around intake is a little ridiculous but the '03+ only has about 1/3 of the length. I dont see it being all that restrictive. I routinely get 27 mpg on the highway if i set the cruise at 65. I think alot of it is your mindset. You paid alot of money for something so you expect a difference. If you get any difference then i guess its money well spent for you.

You have got to be kidding me. So, this means any product sold today is full of sh!t huh? Give me a break.

Yes there are alot of bad companies sellin bad products,, also alot of good companies sellin good products, but using misleading marketing.

As far as the weight loss issue in the news,, the issue isn't if the products work,, its more bout how well they work, and what they help u do,, they all used misleading marketing. If they didn't work at all they wouldn't be aloud to stay on the shelves.

Xenadrine is a great weight loss product, u will lose weight and curb ur appetite.

I think they went lil far with how well it will work and how fast.

But when you have a well established company, with years of good quality products and happy customers,, like K&N,, I think you can pretty much believe what they are telling you.

Like Ken said,, its pretty easy to disprove HP gains, so kinda silly for a well respected company to lie.

Now with the weight loss,, easy to cover your lies since weight loss and each persons physical makeup is so different.
 
if u dont believe it works then dont buy it, some people are too cheap to buy SHlT and just go completely based on numbers im not tryin to be an ass but its not that much money to see for yourself...

Well, I've never believe in the "it sure does feel faster when you hit the higher RPMs, so I know it did something!". A simple explination for that would be it lost power in the lower RPM range so you just THINK it gained it in the higher.

Anyway, I should have mentioned I was going between 70-75 the whole way... On adverage, above 55 MPH each additional MPH decreases MPG by 0.1%. There for saying I was doing 75, if I dropped down to 65 I'd have gotten 29.7MPG. Of course, this is so simplified it's rediculious but you get the point.

Sorry to hear you didn't like the change in sound... different strokes for different folks! I like to hear the engine sucking in air myself.

And last but not least; if you don't buy the HP and MPG gains advertised, it's atleast good enough so you don't have to rip your car appart, or pull out your hair trying to get your filter back into the stock airbox. Why in the world did they set it at such an angle as to be damn near impossible to remove the lid and put it back on in the first place?!?

Anyway, for everyone else... point is, believe what you want; if 27MPG doing 70-75mph doesn't do anything for you, and you don't buy into the HP gains... then don't get it. It's a choice for you to decide, you are the one that will have to live with it (or just eat the $280 for the K&N).

On a side note... I have the same kind of kit for my truck... but without the heatshield (this was before I knew they was an option to get one with a heat shield), do not get one without a heatshield, or atleast build one for it. Doesn't matter how unrestrictive the intake is when you're sucking in air that's 200 degrees (less dense). Learned my lesson on that one!

Look, if its 30 bucks or 300 its still a waste of money if the concensus is that it doesnt do anything, just trying to get info before I buy....after all isn't that kinda the idea of a forum????? I think that would make me intelligent not cheap.
 
I got one when they first came out because it's better than stock.
Better looking... Better sounding... and in my opinion, Better preforming.

That was good enough for me.

larger, less retrictive filter on a less restrictive intake tube will make more power - right?

15rwhp or 11rwhp or 7rwhp - who cares?

if you are looking to add hp - what are your options? sooner or later intake will be one of them.

Although my wife's '04 LS is stock, I have a K & N FIPK ( cold air intake) on my '04 SVT Mustang Cobra. Eventhough the '04 Cobras are advertised to have 390 hp/tq stock, most dyno stock at 360 hp to 380 hp at the rear wheels (add 15% to compute hp at the crankcase). With only the K & N and JBA mufflers as power mods, my '04 Cobra dynoed at 428 hp at the rear wheels (503 hp at the crankcase). K & N products do perform as advertised. The FIPK is advertised to add 30 hp.
 
I don't know if it makes 15hp or not, I do personally think those numbers are a little too high, maybe 9-10hp, but who cares, it does sound DAMN good.
Personally I don't think a boost of 10-15hp you are going to notice a difference on a 3800lb car, I know a lot of people swear to notice the difference, I didn't, I'm just being realistic.
Again..... I'll buy another one again just for the sound, love the way the engine growls at WOT.

10-15hp is probably equivalent to .1, maybe .2 if you're a good driver on the 1/4 mile, do you think you will be able to tell the difference on the street, I don't know, maybe some people have a more sensitive Dyno but, (whatever that is)than others.

If I recall properlly, I'm not sure of this, can't find the link, Mclaren supercharged a 2002 lincoln lse with a gain of 100hp and the 1/4 mile was 13.9s, that a gain of 1.3s vs the stock lincoln, not too bad, so you do the math what a 10-15hp gain will be.

If you're looking for a huge increase in performance, well......not impressive at all....One more time, I would buy it again just for the sound.
 
Look i'm not saying it does nothing, as i have a K&N drop in filter. I'm just saying there has never been any dyno proven results on a Lincoln LS so for me any gains remark is just heresay. Again, not saying it does nothing, but dont think it does what most believe. As far as the sound, i'm sure it adds alot. But for me, i drive a Lincoln. I like a nice quiet ride. After having a Ford Escape as a rental for a week i was amazed at how quiet the LS is.
