Instructions how to take out the factory radio in second gen

On my 2003 I had started by removing the 3 Star bolts that hold the armrest center storage cover in place. Then I slide a butter knife in between the edge of the storage cavity and the outside of the console to pull the storage cavity out. This then allows you to pull out and remove the center console cover that runs from the armrest to the change drawer/ciggarette lighter surround. Bare in mind that your Advance Trac and Parking Brake are harnessed to the under side of this console cover. Be sure to unclip them before attempting to fully remove the cover to prevent damaging them.

I then use a butter knife to pop out the top center dash air vents.

Once all of this is done, it's pretty straight forward. Unbolt and remove the change drawer/ashtray/cigarette lighter assembly.

Now you have access to the radio/climate control unit. They come out together, not separate.


This is the way I did it, and mine is a 2003 not a 2006 so I don't know if there are differences. Also, I'm sure many people think I did this wrong, but its how I did it lol.

It's been covered before, but...

Pull out the center vents, just like gen I.
Pull out the trim around the shifter and the ash tray.
Remove the ash tray (two bolt and two screws).
Remove the radio/climate control bracket assembly, four bolts (two top and two bottom).
Remove the radio from the brackets.

2006 is the same as 2003 in this, but there is not need at all to do this step. That "center console cover" removes without taking anything else off. I've done it several times.
 
I think the reason it's hard finding treads is because the wording of the subject title is not simple instead of how to or instructions on its more like tv dash 7" birthday gift Etc lol
 
I use Google advanced site search. That way you can do some and/or logic and look for phrases.
 
What head unit are you putting in? I've been looking at these JVC units, because they often have an HD Radio based News service. x905NT50HDT-F.jpg

They also used Pioneer for the THX navigation. They have also used other brands for the radios.

Hey hope it's not to much to ask, but from a average joe stand point, I have almost no idea what the console parts are called This hinders me from fully understanding some of the information that you have giving for example

I ran across this and would like to use the delayed power wire location and the gps antenna locations you refer to but would need a little not better but stupid proofed description
I have no idea what a (kick panel or trim is)
 
I don't have pictures.
In this case, the trim mentioned is the plastic part the surrounds the gear shift and wraps up to around the ashtray.
The driver's side kick panel is the piece of plastic at the front side that goes from the carpet up to under the dash. You pull the door gasket part way off then pull the kick panel off.
 
My 03 has the audiophile 6 disc changer. It bangs both highs and bass. Is audiophile in the Alpine family? I keep seeing ppl say it's alpine.

Audiophile is just a term for "high quality audio" not always used properly lol. I wouldn't really consider the system an audiophile system but hey, its better than my 95 bronco.

My owners manual states 3 different types of system depending on the package. Basic, audiophile, and thx which is the navigation unit. Mine says it's audiophile 6 disc changer. Idk just curious. It's definitely a high quality system with great output.

Top part is vent message center controls, pops out very easily with two soft pry tools. can disconnect once out to get it out of your way w/o causing problems. Next gently pry up trim piece around shifter (black and silver trim on it is one piece). Next pop out your climate controls with your fingers from the bottom. May seem a little difficult but will come out. Then remove ashtray/outlet portion, either 2 or 4 bolts on top and bottom (I forget). After those are out you will have 4 bolts for your radio, 2 on top, 2 on the bottom, pull it out and unplug the cluster f&$% of wires and you should be good to go! You might need to grind down pegs on top of climate controls to fit in your dash kit but wait to see. Also spend more than a minute to find your dash kit. Some of them are garbage, can't recommend which one as I went single DIN from my THX system. Good luck man, hopefully your wiring isnt crazy like mine was!

Haha ya, not knockin it too much, I'm just saying its one of those words they throw in there to sell it a little better.

Off-topic, but when I bought my LS the guy who sold it to me was talking up about how difficult and labor intensive it was to install the head unit it has (with navigation - the car didn't come with factory navigation) and the subs and amp. I thought he was just bs'ing me to make the sale, but the more of these type of threads I read, the more thankful I am that he did it and I didn't have to.
 
As Joegr stated there is no correct harness for the thx sytem, no matter what crutchfield or anyone tells you. If you have the alpine system maybe its a different story. Might have missed you saying which of the two you have. If you have the THX system youll probably have to chop a bunch of the wires but my 03 was a bit of a funky half this, half that year setup. You will probably also need to remove factory amps in trunk. Theres many different ways to setup your audio with the THX system. Andrizzle I believe did a pretty nice right up of what he did. I can give you the wiring pinout diagram for you which will help tremendouslyyy if it comes to chopping wires. One of the moderators should make it a highlighted audio thread for everyone else doing this task. Sorry my posts are so lengthy lol.
