IMRC control needed - bad diaphram

Hi gang, It's good to be a newby. I have a '96 Mark VIII with a bad IMRC control left side. (CK2257) I hooked a vacuum generator to it and it appears to have a bad diaphram. The right side opens with vacuum. I have manually moved the linkage on the bottom side, it seems to be free. Anyone have any secrets or know where to get one worth the money?:confused:
 
The 96 IMRC controller is year specific, they are rare and hard to find. Last I heard there were a few left from for for around $400 each, and they pop up for sale on eBay and such from time to time.
 
The kid is right.

You CAN use other years, 93 to 95, but you will get a CE. 97 & 98 would not even work and would be more of a hassle to install.

So best option is to wait for a 96 set to pop up, but the most practical is to get an earlier set and install that. And to think I threw my 96 IMRCs away :(
 
yeah good luck with that, its like finding a needle in a haystack. max at five star ford might be able to get you a left over new one, but be prepare to soil your shorts when you hear the price for that little sucker!!
 
I believe they are both obsolete now. The last post max made, one was over $500 and the other was just under $500. Go to a junk yard, and see if they will part them from the engine. It will be hit or miss.
 
i have complete 93-95 imrc runners with actuators on them if you decide to swap them, like said you'll have a check engine light because the harness's that plug into your 96 actuators wont be hooked to anything, but at least the imrc's will work again.
 
That is really starting to look like the only logical choice these days... your in a bad place if you live somewhere that they do emissions testing and you have to pass with no CEL's....
 
inspections suck! thats why i like florida, probably the only reason i like florida, everything else about it sucks.
 
I'm not 100% sure because I haven't looked at the 96's pcm stuff.

but I'm pretty sure since it's obd2 that you could kill that CEL with PRP and Xcal...or atleast set it to a high threshold so it wont come on for a long time.
 
What would be an interesting tid bit is to see what the IMRC's are saying in a 96 when they are closed and when they are open... I believe its just a potentiometer...
 
on the 98's there is a setting it's basicly the amount of times the controller reports the sticking IMRC before the CEL sets.
Stock the setting is 3.

you could set it to the max value which might be 99?

I get a p1519 code once in a while, sometimes it'll be weeks before it sets again.
cant really tell IF it's sticking or the controller is just telling the pcm it's stuck.
 
Of course you can control the code. My IMRCs are gone and no code thrown for them after all this time.

But as much as I advocate at least a chip tune, many just arn't for the expense.

crazy aint it...save a dollar a day for a year bam..CHIP.
less than a cup of coffee everyday and you can have your cake and eat it too.

I agree. I put off a chip too though, and although I want a dyno-tun next the chip was a GREAT addition and I had wished I did it sooner.

So maybe the OP should look at getting a used IMRC and a chip, still cheaper than a new IMRC!!!
 
Or hunt around and find a good used xcal for cheap... there are deals out there, you just have to hunt for them.
 
At least once you convert to the older set up finding good used IMRC's shouldn't be hard at all...

Has anyone ever tried rebuilding one?

Chip is the first step either way.. basicly.

For alot of people and most cars and off the shelf program works great and it at the very least BETTER than the stock calibration.

Then, down the road you can get a dyno tune and you've already got the hardware..Chip or Xcal.

then further down the road you can get the software and fine tune your calibration to suit your individual tastes and preferences.

it's a typical cascade of events..

I just left Florida... already miss it.
Blue states suck. I'm keeping that Florida tag as long as possible.


BTW: What would it cost to have a regular auto shop install a set of IMRCs on the Mark VIII.
 
Probably a killing... gotta pull the entire intake manifold, and it isn't like a lot of shops have ever worked on a Mark...

I did it once on my car.... I can't bring myself to do it again.
And I don't have the space to do it anymore either....
 
i've pulled over 600 intakes off these, and they still suck, specially if the motor is in the car. i cant see a shop doing it cheap, lots of labor, specially if you dont want things broken.
