Ignition wiring harness ?

Denna,
I would use a 60/40 rosin core solder. Most stores will have it, but make sure its shiny when you finish the solder joint and DON'T FORGET to put the heat shrink tubing on before you solder and it covers the exposed areas completely, making for a watertight seal. I know nobody else has soldered and forgot to put their heat shrink on first! lol

As far as electrical connectors McMaster-Carr is a website for a lot of technical & mechanical parts. I don't think they have automotive specific connectors, but do have heat shrink & loom covers, etc. Prices are IMO way cheaper as a rule and they have hard to find items. Easy website to navigate.

ScottyLogger60,

Since I'm only doing a few solders, this should suffice correct ?

Would the type of alloy used on the injector line affect the electrical properties of the connection (i.e., more resistance) ?

By that picture that you just linked... It is wrong too.

That harness looks like it rubbed through? Not just broken.

DieselDan,

If you're referring to the harness only showing two injector connectors instead of four, that's because I couldn't get a good angle to capture the entire length of the harness and still have enough light. The other two connectors closer to the steering wheel are there, with the one closest to the steering wheel being the one with the broken wire.

If you're seeing that little bit of grey at the end of the broken wire, that's just some grime I must have wiped on it when I was trying to pull it close to the camera phone. The sheath isn't damaged. If I had a better camera, it would be easier to see the wire and not the insulation is damaged.

So you are saying that the wire looked okay but that the insulation was damaged and the wire broke?

As far as the connector at was talking about. From what I am seeing, the connector that the ford person told you you needed is not the correct plug either.

DieselDan,

Other way around, wire bad, insulation good.

A mechanic (not me) must have snipped the wire when I had it in the shop last (pre www.lincolnvscadillac.com education). It looked like a clean cut. That shop was the first to tell me about a spark plug blowing out. They recommended buying a new head because they didn't use spark plug thread kits like Timesert. To their credit, they didn't charge me for their analysis.

After I picked up the car, I realized it was running rough, as if one of cylinders wasn't firing. I didn't care to take it back to the shop as it was about time I learned how to fix things myself.

As for the connector not being the right one, if you can't rely on someone at www.fordparts.com to give accurate information, who would be a better authority ?

hell yeah totally wrong, just look at the shape.

here at LVC.....i was a ford tech for 12 years, dan has ran the dealership game for years too. wrong connector, the fact he called it an "injector connector" proves they are an idiot. call a ford dearship, ask for the parts department and tell them you need a coil on plug "pig tail" you might have to bring it in and match it up with the picture hell i might have one floating around somewhere at work. ill do some digging

DieselDan and chicken,

Thanks for catching the shape difference eagle eyes !

We may have a winner !

It's straight on the left side and curved on the right side.

And the Ford Wiring Pigtail kit connector catalog shows an application description of "Coil - Ignition".

And it's only $31 on Amazon.

that's more like it. its just like anything else the info you get is only as good as the person giving it to you. the fact they called it a injector connector proves they have no idea, the first pic you posted was a coil plug but not the right one. ford likes to move small tabs around on their connectors a lot so you have to make sure they are right. here is another tip, plug it in before you solder it in ;)

For the benefit of others with this problem, Standard Motor has a replacement connector (part# S-812) and costs about $21 on Amazon. It has a longer warranty than Motorcraft, costs $10 less and most importantly, it works !
