In the past I had put the conical filter on and then I was told to do the icebox. So today I had some time and I made it.

Icebox001.jpg

Its made out of aluminum instead of regular sheet metal and I painted it flat black and put trim on it. You can't really see in the picture but it does wrap around under the mass air to prevent as much heat as possible. It won't stop all the heat but hopefully most of it.

Looks good!

I plan on making one myself as well, but I don't know when yet. Maybe next weekend I'll design it. I will be designing mine out of card board first and then taking it to a local shop to have it bent up. I plan on having mine be a true heat shield, incasing the filter on the side as well as the back.

Mine incases the side and the back but the only thing is that there is a small gap in the back to fit the mass air bolt. The gap isn't big but I still wish it wasn't there. I also used cardboard to get my model then I just made it with the aluminum and bent it and bolted it in. With my intake setup being so tight since I have a big 9 inch cone, making the box work was a pain and a lot of fabrications.

I still don't understand how that is supposed to get colder intake air than the stock setup?

What am I missing here?

i agree i made the same set up and it just seemed that the stock airbox sucks morecold air but it does look good

you missing "ricer hype"...that is all.

no performance gain to be had, been there done that..it slowed my car down and made it in consistant at the track.

my car instantly picked up .2-.3 after i went back to the stock air box and paper filter.

the data doesnt lie, nor fall prey to internet hype

The way people do their intakes to me is basically there own choice. I like having the conical filter and the box and thats how I am. There are people out there who prefer the stock setup too. Most stock setups from the factory are the best way to go but sometimes change is nice. :) That's my opinion and I'm sure other think differently.

Now, forgive me if you've already answered this, but was that with or without a good "icebox" type hot air insulating system? I'd expect that kind of change without an insulator, but I really wouldn't expect any change in performance from stock with an insulated setup like this.

i had a fiberglass heat shield in place that isolated the maf from the engine comp

it has alot to do with air entering from the side of the conical filter, and disrupting the laminar air flow through the maf

it was a lose, lose situation

Yeah that I can totally see happening. Maybe one of the air straightener screens would help... might add a restriction but I doubt it would be notable on a stock-ish car.

Eh what do I care I don't run a cone filter.

I guess it all depends on what you are doing with you Mark ... The above set up looks good ... adds to the looks of the engine bay ... but won't gain performance ... but if you are after some nice look ... you did a great job.
