My Gen II is blue so...

I'm picky with white cars, but Love it on Mark VIIIs. especially slammed GenIIs.

Silver, i hate because of bad paint experiences.. one other reason being: I remember in paint school, they told us Silver Metallics had a sort of aluminum in them, and from time it oxidizes and paint just looks grey.

I myself havn't seen this yet.
 
what are you going to do about the rust? I would address that before you paint anything. afterall automotive paint is NOT cheap.
 
Well ya, the rust will be the first part of the project. Its not that bad, but bad enough. I think most Marks I have seen have rust on the lower lip of the passenger door. I think water gets in between the door and seal and then sits, eating away since that door is opened a lot less.

Hey Unity heres a little trick for shooting metalics.After you've shot your last color coat and before it's had time to tack up too much,take some more color and over reduce it,then crank up your air presure at the gun,then holding the gun about 18 to 24 inches from the panel,give it,for lack of a better term, a good "fogging". This will help even out your metalics and help get rid of any tiger stripes you might end up with.But like they say try it on an old hood or something first to get the feel of it.Good luck and please post some pic's.
 
+1........don't forget to paint all the seperate pieces in the same orientation.........all facing the same way. If you have panels that will be next to each other, and one is sprayed upside down/from a different direction the metallic will reflect differently. I'm voting for black. As long as your prep is good, you'll be fine. If you need to touch down the road, the black will be no problem. The silver will need the whole section/panel repainted and possibly faded in to the surrounding panels if the paint isn't an exact match. If you need to spray silver, do some racing stripes. You DO still race right?:D That would actually look pretty cool. IMO.:cool:

+1 for black gen1s rocking, I love mine.

Idk about silver, a blacked out gen1 looks awesome. I have gotten nothing but compliments on how mine looks, especially since I vht'd the taillights, looks amazing.

With your rims unity, black'll look awesome!


I need to see someones black gen1 looking sexy, because mine never, ever will....ever again since my sister hit it :Bang maybe you can come fix my rear quarter after you get better at bodywork haha

In reality, doing the drivetrain swap is cake compared to correctly painting the whole car. You can easily swap the motor and trans in one day, no dealing with wiriing nightmares as G2 will run your motor without any issues using G2 harness. Face it, money spent on painting and repairing a rusted 1st gen will be lost sale time. Unless you're emotionally attached to this particular car, then pick up a silver 2nd gen and swap it over. You'll save money, time, and aggravation. Just another look on the whole thing ;)

Unless you want to try your hand at painting.

Dealing with rust stinks and it always comes back.
 
I would rather swap. But one also has to consider the transport costs or if I pick up a running Gen II, dumping the thing when done. Then there is the labor involved, I dont think I could swap it in my garage by myself. While I do have a COP setup and all that jazz, there would still be a lot a work unless I had a lift - which I do not. In fact if you saw my driveway you would see one would not want a rolling chassis anywhere near it! Garage is fine until you step out, then it drops at a 30 degree angle.

Also if I pick up a Gen II shell it would have to be perfect for me to consider it worth it - odds of finding one is rather remote. And odds are if it looks perfect it would cost considerably more.

So I figure just paint it to add a couple years to its life.

Black will leave you with little white spots if you do not clean the body and prep it to perfection and paint in a very sterile enviroment, most touchiest color there is
 
Yup, familiar with those. I have a 3M pre-paint cleaner that should prevent that as much as possible.
 
My parents 06 Focus hood had to be repainted and it was fisheyed like CRAZY... they redid it and it fisheyed AGAIN... my parents needed the car back so they said :q:q:q:q it... been like that ever since...

Note to the world don't get your car painted at North Branch Ford.... Lol
 
Most likely a contamination issue from the factory. I would 1) strip it completely and repaint, or 2) put a different hood on it, but then you would have to blend the fenders, probably again.
