ok so i took the altenator and the optima battery to oriellys to get tested ,both bad got new ones , put them in, put the tester on them and with the ac on it was at around 13 volts and i wasnt sure if it was working so i unplugged the cable to the altenator to see what happened, nothing happened so i plugged it back in and turned the ac off and it went back up to about 14 how can i really tell if its working or does it sound ok im about to go to the car and put a load tester on it a wear the battery down a little and start the car and see if it goes back up

I think it's fine but I wouldn't be draining the battery down and making the alternator do more than it has to. I have had 3 of your alternators before but I can say that they are better than the Duralast alt. You should be reading right at 14 volts and with air on, it may drop down into the 13's

yeah its about there but good thing changing the alt is easier than :q:q:q:q to do but i guess ill find out if it really works

I remember "Frogman" saying once that the Optima batteries were really starting to suck. I wouldn't know because I never had one. Apparently he has ran across a few that have had problems with them and I think he said himself that he had one or two go bad on him.

Remember, that brand new battery is not fully charged when you pick it up. I'd run the car for a day or so and let the battery charge all the way up. THEN, put a volt meter on it and the alternator and see what it says.

As far as the Optima batteries? Yes, they do indeed sucketh nowadays. The battery design is still top notch, but manufacturing and quality control has gone down the toilet, unfortunately. Personally, I'll never buy another Optima. I'm all for Odyssey batteries now... until those suffer the same fate as the Optimas did..

Edit: Nope. Being the idiot that I can sometimes be, I went through 5of them before I pulled my head out of my ass and realized that either I'm the most unlucky person when it comes to OPTIMA batteries, or that they actually suck. I'm going to go with #2.

Been through the same thing with Optimas. They seem to do ok on a daily driven application, but if they sit for any length of time (like a week) they seem to lose charge very fast. I used to have the charge the one in my race car every friday before we went out even though it had been charged when I parked it. I too am an Odyessy user now, but have been looking at Brail as well.

I've owned 5 optimas in the past 15 yrs on different cars, and none have lasted more than 5-6 months tops fwiw... ;)
