motor nor trans were broken when I removed them
motor had a rattling timing chain, that I didn't want to break during my points races
Trans had a shudder in reverse only.

I drove the motor for over 25K making that noise.

Considering I paid 650.00 for the car the motor came from and 275 for the trans... nah that wasn't high dollar.

trans rebuild 2K
rebuilt motor 2K
THOSE are high dollar repairs.


AND...1 replacement engine and trans in 400,000 miles?
Well within my pain threshold.

Well. The car is still sitting. I'd love to get that one off ebay, but unfortunately, I can't spend any more money until my wife gets paid on the 16th. I also have a local salvage yard looking for one for me. Hopefully I can find one soon. BTW, has anyone tried opening the unit up and replacing the relays? A mechanic friend of mine told me today that he did that on a Taurus. He said that you could drill out the rivets and literally remove and replace the relays on the inside? Since mine is toast, I may try opening it up just to see what it looks like. Any thoughts?
 
I would imagin the internal parts are the same...
the pin out on the harness connector is likely the main difference.

It wouldn't hurt to open up your smoked one.. you might even see visual evidence of which relay is fried.

Certainly be worth a shot! I've sometimes wondered why this hasn't been investigated in the past - I would think any electronics engineer 'worth his salt' could take apart a module, identify the problem part and fix or replace.

but that being said.. chances are the "ending bid" will be very close if not more than what KK has offered his to you for.

THAT being said.. you should just wait til the 16th and get that one from KK.
his price is less than half of what they originally sold for, his price is very fair.

That is.. if you cannot open and fix yours of course.

hell.. for the amount of down time, and frustration you are going thru, 125.00 I'd gladly pay to relieve myself from this worry.

wouldn't waste his time fixing a module that he could buy for 125.00.

I dont guess you've paid an electronics engineers labor rate recently.
125.00 will net you roughly 30 minute of work or less.

Nope, nor would I. But, I was thinking maybe someone out there, or on the Lincoln boards may have an electronics background and could troubleshoot these obsolete parts.

Yep. I love this car. And I would like to keep it. Like I said, my problems over the past 10 years of ownership have been few and far between. She's been a really reliable car for me. This is the first time she's been out of commission for more than just a couple of days. It's frustrating to say the least after so many years of reliable service. I still haven't found a VLCM yet. I am in contact with a couple of people and may be able to get one soon. Hopefully. But until then, I'll be installing my radiator this weekend and unplugging the A/C compressor and wiring the fan to a switch. That way, at least I may be able to drive the car until I can get a VLCM. If I can't get one from my possible sources, I may have no choice but to get one from Ford. My local dealership said they had 3 new ones in their warehouse. But the price is rediculous. So I'll just hurry up and wait. And thanks for all the help guys. I do appreciate it.:)

That's odd. Two dealerships gave me quotes on parts that they had in stock in their warehouse. One said he could have it here for me tomorrow. Unfortunately, the cost was waaaaaay out of my budget. And I'm reasonably sure it was accurate because they both needed the part number from my VLCM to match it up with the ones they had on hand. But like I said, I seriously can't afford the Ford price.

Last time I checked, they were like $400+

They may have some old stock but their no longer in production!
 
Good grief! I am getting extremely frustrated! I can't find one of these parts anywhere. There were a couple on ebay recently, but I didn't have the money to bid on them. Then they were gone. Now I'm looking all over hither and yon for one and can't find one. My car is a lawn ornament because of this one stupid little control box. This is rediculous! I can't afford what Ford wants for a NOS part from their warehouse and I can't get anyone to sell me one. Now I have to wait until the end of the month before I will have enough money to try to look again. So the old girl has to sit another two weeks.

Does anyone have one of these blasted things!?!?!? And can I get it for under $150.00 by the end of the month???? And just out of curiosity, is there any way I can bypass the crappy little box so I can at least drive my car? I've been thinking about straight wiring the radiator cooling fan to a switch and unplugging the A/C compressor. I don't know if that will work or not. But I need to do something. This is driving me absolutely NUTTY!!!!! I'm not a wealthy person. My family lives basically from paycheck to paycheck. We have absolutely zero desposable income. The reason this is so frakking frustrating is that my '96 Mark has never had a problem that left it sitting for more than two days in the whole 10 years I've owned it. I have had very few problems. And those problems were easily and inexpensively repaired. This time, she's been sitting for over a month!! I am at my wit's end. Please help!!??

Behold! The inner workings of a 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII VRCM. When I opened this thing up yesterday, it smelled like an electrical fire. I'm pretty sure something in there is fried. But I can't see where. But it is solid state so I don't thing there's any way to really "repair" it. Cool though.
