Notes

Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly Removal and Installation CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

2. NOTE: The hex holding feature can be used to prevent turning of the stud while removing the nut. Remove the nut and disconnect the stabilizer bar link. Discard the nut.

3. Remove the nut and bolt and disconnect the shock absorber and spring assembly.· Discard the nut and bolt.4. Partially lower the vehicle.

5. Remove the right upper shock mount cover.

6. Remove the retainers and the left upper shock mount cover.

7. WARNING: Do not remove the center nut. This nut holds the upper spring mount in place and if this nut is removed the spring tension will be released. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. Remove and discard four nuts. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly. 8. CAUTION: Make sure the shock absorber lower bushing end caps are in place before installing the bolt and nut. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly

Disassembly

WARNING: All vehicles are equipped with gas pressurized shock absorbers which will extend unassisted. Do not apply heat or flame to the shock absorbers during removal or component servicing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury. The shock absorber and spring assembly is under extreme load. Do not attempt to disassemble the shock absorber and spring assembly without using a spring compressor. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly.

CAUTION: Over tightening the vise can damage the shock absorber tube. Mount and mark the shock absorber and spring assembly.
1 Position the shock absorber and spring assembly in a suitable holding device.
2 Mark the upper mount, spring and shock absorber for assembly reference.

NOTE: If installing a new spring, make sure the part number is correct. Refer to the Vehicle Certification (VC) label for the correct spring code. Compress the spring.
1 Install an appropriate spring compressor.
2 Compress the spring.

While holding the shock absorber rod, remove and discard the nut.

Remove the upper mount and dust boot as an assembly.

Carefully remove the spring and spring compressor.
Assembly

NOTE: If a new shock absorber, spring or upper mount is installed, the new part should be marked in the same place as the old part to make sure the assembly is correctly aligned.

Inspect the lower and upper spring seats for damage.
Inspect the spring insulator for wear or damage. Install a new upper mount if necessary.
NOTE: If installing a new spring make sure the part number is correct. Refer to the Vehicle Certification (VC) label for the correct spring code. Inspect the spring for nicked or scratched paint. If the paint is nicked or scratched, install a new spring.
If removed, place the shock absorber into the vise.

Position the shock and spring compressor onto the strut.

Position the upper mount and dust boot onto the spring. Make sure the marks made during disassembly, Step 2, are lined up.

Install a new nut.
Remove the spring compressor.
Install the shock absorber and spring assembly.

You also need to remove the sway bar end links in order to withdraw the shock lower mounting bolts.

Please note that if using spring compressors, the factory front springs seem to take a lot of compression before they actually stop pushing on the spring mounts. Take the largest (widest) bite that you can, before using the compressors, and try to make sure that you have an impact wrench handy to do the honors with the compressors. If you are changing to Eibachs, the amount of compressing needed is drastically reduced on the front springs, compared to stock.

This might be a tough job for using one hand, in case you still have those broken bones from the jack accident.

Thanks, Im not doing it just yet I just want to get things in order and prit a few things out.

Rent a spring compressor from Autozone or Advance whichever has it. It's invaluable

Make sure it's this kind... http://images.mustangmonthly.com/pr...ront_suspension_upgrade+spring_compressor.jpg

Air tools don't hurt to break things loose. Otherwise coat them in PB Blaster a few days ahead of time. And if some bolts don't come loose, torch them instead of breaking them off and having to drill them out.

all great advice so far... yes, do yourself a favor and just buy new sway bar end links for the front ahead of time and replace them if you havent done it in the past year. No amount of PB could help mine. Same applies for shocks if you havent replaced them yet; now is as good a time as any.

Go to Autozone and buy your own set for $35. I did that last week. They worked great for me b/c I changed both sets this past weekend.

One thing that I found out that the 4 bolts on the top go a certain way and also make sure that these 4 bolts match up with the way the strut mounts at the bottom of the knuckle. The first one I did I had to take back out and compress again to get it turned correctly.

I just stuck a 3/8" drive extension handle through the shock bolt hole and turned the bottom of the shock to match the top. Hint: it won't hurt to place a nice light coat of white grease between your nylon spring seats and their landings on the shocks. It makes it pretty easy to rotate the bottom half of the shock when minor mismatches in alignment occur.

I noticed the instructions said discard nuts. Do you just pitch them and buy new nuts?

New struts should come with new nuts. The ones I bought did.

Thanks for the info on how to set up the shocks once you have them together...
