before i put the 355s and trac lok in what will the difference be in gas mileage? i transport legal document so im racking up 2500-3000 miles a week so will it put a hurtin on me? (the car wont be used for work long but still)

WHY? you dont think 3.55's will be noticeable? what about 3.73's? it seems like everyone is going 4.10 or 4.30 and am just wondering why noone is going middle of the road here. i think 3.73's would be the perfect compromise for rpms, mileage, and power increase. what do you think? what would the diffeence be in the 1/4? a couple tenths or so between the 3.73 and the 4.10's? thanks.
 
Geno has been working on Marks for a long time, he knows whats what.

I also wouldn't do a gear swap for less than 4.10's.

I'm sure you will notice something but for the time effort and $$$ involved it's not worth it. Just get 4.10s and be done with it. A lot of people who go with 3.73s laster regret not going with 4.10s. I have not heard anyone complain with 4.10s wishing they went with 3.73s

geno does know, but that doesnt mean everyone wants to run 3000 rpm on the freeway. and a little more gear is better than none at all. I dont want to go"all out" and im sure there many who feel the same. its all a compromise on what "YOU" want.
 
exactly, not everyone wants to run sky high in the rpm range, plus i dont do what everyone else says just because one person says its the thing to do, im not disrespecting you geno, we have both been around this one type of car for years, i was going to put 4:10's in mine too, because at first its what everyone was saying to go with, but screw that, i decided on 3:73's. i dont do alot of highway driving, harly any really, but i do make many trips back and fourth from my house to my shop and i like the car to be quick off the line but also not have a top speed of 100 mph before it wants to blow up. plus with the rising gas i already know i'll lose gas mileage with 3:73's, never mind 4:10's. i'm not saying 4:10's arent the gear to go with, but for me, they arent, and im not gonna go with a certain ratio just because everyone says to. but let the original poster here make his decision, dont put 3:73's in your car just because i now said thats what i am doing, its your car, put whatever ring and pinion in the car that you feel will best suite you, i have owned 5 mark VIII's personally plus hundreds i have parted, i know how they act stock, i have also been in a mark with 3:73's and i know how it acted too, and it was perfect for me and how little i drive. its just the right amount of fun!!!
 
You have to decide which gears are best for you. stock is good for gas mileage good driveability and very reliable. 3:55's you wont notice any differnece except in your pocketbook. 3:73's are good for a small gain with minimal sacrafices on the highway. 4:10' and 4:30's are great for performance, but are questionable on the highway. How fast you drive, and how often you drive on the interstate will have a big factor with these.

For me 3:73's were perfect. I wanted some mild performance, and I am always on the highway, so I didnt want any major sacrafices there.

Good luck on your search. You might have better luck finding a loaded pumpkin w\ a trac-lock setup on sccoa.com and corral.net

There is no problem with making an educated decision on what gears to run. Jamie decided 3.73's are fro him, maybe 3.55's are right for someone else. Personally though I wouldn't waste my time with anything less than 4.10's.
 
Well Jamie since I see you'll be checking this forum haha,

I need that clockspring and 3 headlight retaining clips, I found some tabs.

First of all your not near 3k on the highway, even at 75 mph, the 3.55's would be barely noticeable, unless your juicin' hard or blown. The 3.73's are nice but still not putting the car in that nimble mode where it just LEAPS when you hit the gas and is still very realistic on the highway, probobly more then any other 4.10 geared car I have ever driven. At 75 mph I am at 2650 and get 25.0 all day on the highway at 65 I get 27.5!!

The real best part is the feeling that the car lost 450 lbs, very nimble and "light on it's wheels" Beautiful throttle response, the engine is ALWAYS right on the cams 3k marker, it's the $hit, trust me on this one.

So for the "why not the comprimise", simply been there, done that MANY MANY times and learned. Trust me 4.10's will make you ripa$$ like this out of the hole and still do THIS on the HIGHWAY.

Plus factor in the LABOR and COST of doing this job the right way before you decide. In 11 years 90% of our 3.73 or higher gear customers all came back for a re-gear to 4.10's.

There is NO legitimate reason not to go 4.10's, even your average will goto 18 mpg range or better just because your using less throttle to get the car moving, these cars are very efficient on gears with the wide ratio trans we have.

I second that motion,I have 4:10's and cruise 65-70mph at about 2500-2600 rpms.
Hwy mileage is 25-26mpg according to the computer (if you can keep from beating the crap out of it.)

That never occurred to me before. I'll look into getting them myself now.
 
beleive me geno i know your word is true but you know what i do and i just figured hell a free setup heck why not... id love nothin more than 4.10s i just wasnt sure what m mileage would be at when im cruisin on the highway 80-90 practically all day unless im gunnin around town especially since 93 oct is WAAAAY up there in price i didnt want to jump into a significant loss with out knowing first and....... FREE always sounds good but i might rethink.... drivin several thousand miles a week you tend to come across alot of tough rice (think their tough) and why not make it an even EASIER spanking!!

Buy the Geo nd then 4.10 the Mark.
