How long does your batery last with the raiod playing.I thought my battery needed replacing but then realized it was dying so fast while listening to the radio cause I would turn the key one more click to turn on all the electrical stuff not just the radio. I took it to autozone and they said the battery was good. I left it alone after that, but today I was watching a movie on my nav screen and the car died 40 minutes in. I was thinking of getting one of those optima deep cycle batteries. Just want to make sure the ls doesn't have retarded wiring that causes the battery to drain and doesn't let you enjoy your radio.

Yea you can't run a bunch of accessories with the car off for too long.

I usually never find myself in the position to wait 40+ min in my car with it off. Especially watching movies lol.

Oh and running a deep cycle won't change too much - it still needs to be charged.. All your doing with the nav/HU/speaker amps blasting away is discharging pretty quickly

I don't think I've left it on that long. Always use the accessory position, and not the run position. It is likely that you have damaged your battery by discharging it so much several times. I would think that in the accessory position with the radio on (unless you have a several hundred watt system) that it should run for four hours or so.
A deep discharge battery will not help. What you need to look at is the "reserve" rating of the battery. The higher the reserve number, the longer the battery can power things.

Mine last for about 30-40 minutes turned almost all the way up. All I do is start it every 2 beers then shut it off after the third, then repeat. If it's gonna be a all nighter I throw my battery charger on and let it rock all night. Those stock amps use some power.

I have an Optima yellow top. It says I can run it for 1.5 hours without charging. but I've never ran it that long. I've ran it for up to an hour with no problems.

I do turn off accessories I'm not using though, like the heater/AC.

i would say mine gets too low after about 10 min (three amps sure are thristy)and the low voltage alarm on my radar detector will start to beep below 11 volts and once the battey power get down to 10.5 volts, the remote start will automaticly kick on for 20 mins to charge the battery back up.

oh yea, as said before, never let your battery drain its self all the way down, as this will drasticly reduce your batterys life!

yeah, forgot to mention I'm not bumpin my isht without the vehicle running.

About 40 minutes on my 06 with the stock Motorcraft 650CCA battery. Nothing turned on except audio at moderate volume.
Thankfully, I have a Schumacher SSC-1500A handy :P

What are you guys doing for needing to stay in your car for hours on end sitting in place????

I go to school and my classes are scattered. I have big breaks in between so instead of driving back and forth, since I commute, I stay there the whole day. I have like a 3 hour gap in between one of my classes so i can just watch a movie and eat lunch. I took my dad's expedition to a drive-in over the summer and the inside lights wouldn't go off becase we had the glass dorr opened in the back so i just took the lights bulbs off. I didn't notice that the outside lights were still on, the ones that turn one when you open a door. I watched a movie plus half of another, maybe about 2 and a half hours with the stereo on plus the outside lights on. Still turned on with no hesitation when we left. I was working on my ls with the door open and the inside lights were on. 30 min later the car startd fliiping out on me with the alarm cause the battery died.

How would a deep cycle battery not last longer. Isn't that what they are for. like when you install big subs and amps and stuff? If it can last longer for big subs how can they not last longer for stock subs and the nav screen

Well you can get a badass battery. They are just expensive.

In my competition car I ran 5 huge dry cell bats. Each battery weighed 70 lbs.

You could get one of those suckers and run your car for hours on end with no problem at all.

Each has a 128 amp hour reserve.

You basically wanna get something that has a high reserve. It will help, but instead of buying a new batt, I would just run the car for 15 min for every hour of movie watching... I am sure 15 min of idle gas won't outweigh buying a new battery

Deep cycle does not mean greater reserve capacity. Deep cycle means that it is damaged less when it is fully discharged than a normal battery would be. In other words you can run the battery down to a lower voltage without hurting it as much. That won't help you, because the LS electronics are still going to get upset when you go below 10 volts. What you would need would be greater reserve capacity. (Note that often deep cycle batteries do have higher reserve ratings, but not all do, and you don't have to buy deep cycle to get a battery with a high reserve rating. Typical deep cycle batteries also do not have enough surge capacity (CCA - Cold Cranking Amps) to start a car.)

That makes sense.Where did you get that that battery from andrizzle? That remote start sounds pretty cool too, how it starts the car up when the battery get a certain voltage.

The brand is Kinetik PowerCells. They are car audio based batteries. Built for abuse.

They have alot of sizes, I would say a KHC 1800 or a KHC 2000 would be nice in your situation. Google it and search ebay cuz you can get them a ton cheaper than retail prices on their site:

Alright.cool thanks...Should i replace my battery or just add it to it?

Hmm... might replace the stock Motorcraft with a DieHard Platinum (which IINM is a Johnson Controls made Odyssey, except much cheaper).

Edit : WTF eh? According to the link below, the stock Johnson Control made Motorcraft BXT-66-650 should have a 130minute RC. Guess it just wasn't adequately charged (had to have it jumped on my first test drive at the dealer after checking all the electronic doo-dads for ~35 minutes). Either that or Motorcraft battery specs are just BS.

Yeah i dont know whats up with this. I;m not use to having a car die 30 minutes of you in it with something on.

I know that both of my LSs will go for more than an hour with no problems with the key in the accessory position and the radio on (stock, and not played too loud to stand).
I would fully expect that you couldn't sit very long with the key turned to run without the engine running, but then you shouldn't ever do that with any car. In the old days, if you did that then your melted ignition coil was a bigger problem than the dead battery.

use your time wisely and hook up with some college girls that dorm there instead.

kinetic is the :q:q:q:q. They are expensive though. I looked at them before I bought my yellow top.

I have a girlfriend so dorms hook ups are out. I'm going to start lacrosse soons it'll take some time up. It's just for those days that I need some relaxing while still at school
