how do i remove shift knob?

hello all. i just bought a woodgrain shifter for my 00 ls8. on the new one, i notice two screws that hold it in place. how do i remove the ring that covers those screws on the one i have on the car? it doesnt seem like it screws off.

Type shift knob in search. It will bring up a thread with same question. The reply was to just slip the black ring down to uncover the screws.
