i heard you can take off the bottom part of the intake under the filter and take off the resinator and silencer. would it be a good idea to cut thos parts off and get some fiberglack resin kit and cover the holes?

No you'll be sucking hot air then. And look at LMS for the smoothed tube.

i went and looks the links dont work.. i was thinking of something on the cheap side

No you'll be sucking hot air then.

How so? With the silencer removed, you are still drawing air from outside of the hot engine bay environment.

Invisible: The jury is still out with regards to removing those 2 appendages on the intake tube. They're called Helmholtz resonators and are there to help performance.

They look ugly though, so remove them if you want. Just cut them smooth, use plastic from the resonators you just cut off to fill the holes. (make them fit nice and use a decent glue to hold them in) Next, get some kind of filler to smooth over the areas, then paint.

Jamie97lsc used to do them for a fee - maybe still does? You'd have to ask him.

He was also talking about removing the tube to the airbox underneath I believe.

Anything underneath the air-box is outside the engine bay i.e. below the sheet metal. (fender area)

The only thing under there is the silencer. (which has a really small snorkel)

I wouldn't know if removing that silencer really improves performance or not, but it does make for plenty of space around the air compressor. (for those who still have it)

yeah im talking about the parts under the sheet metal and has any of you or anyone you know removed the 2 parts up top and noticed a difference in hp loss? cuz if there is no loss then there would be a lot better cosmetic apperance

I never noticed any difference, but then we are talking about very small gains or losses that you would never notice from the driver's seat.

Which style intake do you have?

Early 93's (like mine) had a dimpled tube. (indentations running down the length) Whereas the later 93's (and all later gen 1's) had a smooth, more solid tube - better from an appearance standpoint. Better performance? No idea.

i have the smooth version not the one with the dimples running down the middle

^ lol
i have all the crap out in my mark!

If you dont have air ride that is def the way to go. But if you still have air ride i think you will have a problem finding a air filter that will fit between the fenderwell and compressor assy.

I've read of folks that have removed the lower portion of the intake & inadvertantly hydrolocked their motor in heavy rain. It seems to me that the swiss-cheese airbox mod would likely open things up just as much as removing the lower intake. I did both to my 93 when I had it but it wasn't noticeable on the butt-dyno. Just a little louder.

Only problems with Jamie's intake (which I had made one like it a few years back) is water ... if you are driving in a big rain storm you could get water into the air intake ...

This is why I removed mine ... drive the car too much and one day I was in a bid down pour where I hit a puddle ... big puddle ... scared me too much ..

I also had a large 9" long Cone filter. Top of the filer almost rested on the bottom of the bumper. where it was sucking real cold air.

I used a 90 degree bend rubber tub you can get at any Home Depot. If you want you can use thermosleeve to help keep the heat out...
