Are Gen1 and Gen2 radiator fans the same , or swapable in anyway?
I did search got no results...need 100% accurate answers only please

my fan motor is bad, friend has a gen2 fan I can borrow, need to know if it's the same exact size, plug same or do I need pigtail also

Since I just found this out ill pass on the info. G1 have two wire from the pigtail and the G2 have three wire.

Yes they will swap (rads.)
Pigtail I'm not sure on so will leave that to someone else to answer...

Ok if the bolt holes are the same on the shroud then I can cut his pigtail too...
Err what's the extra wire on the Gen2 for?
Which color is the 3rd , I need pos/grnd color scheme

the extra wire is for low speed and high speed, gen 1 vcrm controls the fan speed different internally, the are all the exact same fan, 2 wire or 3 wire harness, doesnt matter because all the fans from 93 to 98 are 3 prong inside the motor plug, they all interchange. you dont need to cut his pigtail off yours will work just fine.

Use the two outside wires. The middle one actually terminates in the harness, few inches into it. It doesn't reach anywhere at all. So in the end, the fans are the same, and so are the harnesses. The 1st gens have two speeds directed by the vcrm, while the 2nd gens do it with more finesse ... fully variable, both using just the two outside wires.

i know on my gen 1 when i first ha hot wired the fan cause my vcrwm went out i had it connected to the high, and i burnt out 6 alternators in 1 summer, then i realized it was two speed and put it on low

So how exactly do you hotwire the fan? I have the same problem but I can't afford to burn out alternators, so I need to do it right the first time!!!

+1

well the fan is already grounded, so with a jumper wire, connect one of the two positive wires, and see which one turns slower, i cannot remember off hand wich one is the lower one

i ran a wire from the battery into the car to a toggle switch, then a wire from the toggle switch to the low part of the fa, that is it, keep in mind you still need the fan plugged in so this would be splicing the wires, i also did this when i was retarted and in high school, so anyone else can chime in

Just wanted to say, that the 96 GEN I is also variable. It uses PWM to vary fan speed.

The 97 and 98 have 2 different p/n's, because the Fan blade wheel was changed. The 97's have a decreased blade angle, from the 93-96's. The 98's have a decreased blade angle over the 97's.
