Horrible gas mileage! Help!

The downstream sensors are passive. They rarely fail. The up-stream sensors will trigger an under-performing condition.

Will they? I can't remember anything from O2 stuff from school.. ;) I thought the first one was for A/F ratio and second was for cat efficiently..

That's what my mechanic told me. He said the downstream sensors were used to monitor the upstream sensors. They don't "control" anything.

Upstream controls fuel curve when in closed loop. Downstream monitors the delta through the cats solely to notify you if the cats are underperforming.

Dunno the reliability spec on the downstream sensors, though. I'm sure they can fail like any other.

I average about 320 - 340 miles per tank. Have always run 93 Octane in it, and saw a slight increase when I put the K&N Intake on it.

Hovering in the 20.x mpg is the norm for me. About 65% of my driving is 80 mph highway, and the rest city at around 45 - 50 mph.

Wow, V6? Something has to be going on with my car... I can't even get 250miles on a tank! I unhooked my battery while at work today so everything is reset now. Shot in the dark, we'll see how that works out.

Nope - I've got a 2006 V8. I stomp on it occasionally to pass someone, but normal week-day driving is in D5. On the weekend, I'll do some SST but that doesn't happen to often.

It will probably happen more once I get the reverse SST mod completed.

I recently read a magazine test between the Prius and the Golf TDI - I think the Prius did beat the Golf in mileage, but the Golf (especially the DSG equipped one) trounced it in every other way.

I was being sarcastic with the prius.

For a nice DD to save on gas id get an altima hybrid. They roomy, look nice and
have a lot more power than a cruddy prius.

I always like the TDI Jetta's. theres something about the sound of the diesel engine I like.

Good milge and there sick. Also very customizable.

I like the older model as opposed to the newer one. I was gonna get one before I got my LS.

Warming the car up with remote start is good for you, but it is actually somewhat bad for the car.

Can you elaborate joe? I have a short commute to work, so I let my car idle everyday in the cold winter to let the engine run about 20m total before I turn it off. I do this because I've heard bad things about doing short start/stops long-term in the winter. (causing increased condensation in engine/exhaust for example)

To the OP, I have about the same mileage in my V8 doing what you are describing. The past 3 winters of LS driving I've averaged about 12-14mpg. All city though.

Well whatever, knew I shouldn't of bought one of these damn cars. Never heard anything good about them ever! haha

I can think of about a million good things about this car and only a handful of bad things. This car rocks. Not the V6 though. :P

A buddy of mine has an 01 tdi jetta, it's chipped, straight piped, bigger injectors, a down pipe, a stage 2 turbo from a vr6 and in the works is propane injection, it's a 5 speed and it roasts the tires going into 5th no joke. And he still gets 600-700km a tank.

Oh and he has angel eyes, 4 12" type r's in the trunk. Lol I'll get a pic of it. Sucks though he has never driven the car with all the upgrades on dry pavement haha

I get 10 mpg in my continental. She runs great and idles great but the mileage goes down FAST when idling. I'm thinking it might be a cat plugged. Replaced plug wires (that helped a lot they were original equipment from 1996!), plugs, fuel filter, and one of the coil packs. FML
