High RPM at start up?

I have had the 2002 Lincoln LSE for about a month now. Already bought sway bar bushings and just need to get them installed. Just replaced a broken driver side window regulator.

Now I have a question. When I initially start up the car the idle is instantly at 2000-2100 rpm and then slows to about 1500 rpm. If the car is warm the idle after start up is a bit less but still initially starts are 2000-2100rpm. To me the car just starts up at too high of an idle and wonder what can be done to lower it? The winter temps are coming fast and the last thing I need is the car to start up at 2100rpm with the temps are below zero. Just wondering if this is normal and if it can be adjusted lower.

Sounds pretty normal, provided the idle eventually settles around 700 or so RPM after a few seconds.

all cars tend to stay at a high-ish rpm when first started. Especially if its cold or the vehicle has been off for a good while(over night, hours). Only time I would worry is if you start it and sit there and the idle does not start to fall after 3-5 seconds(it may not go to idle but as long as it starts working its way down you are good).

I like to call it the cars way of telling you when to put in gear and go haha, or warm up time.

this is part of the car's emission cycle - I believe it's to heat up the CAT and sensors quickly before getting to normal idle. All LSes do this.

Completely normal. The cold isn't going to hurt the engine any as long as you change the oil when you should and use the recommended weight synthetic.

The Motorcraft Super Premium or whatever the hell it is, is a syn blend, and that's what the owners manuals says to use.

Thanks for the info guys. Glad to hear that it is normal. It just starts at a high idle and then it comes down to about 1500 rpm in a few seconds, and then lower as it warms up.

I noticed this on mine also, it does seem rev higher than other cars for a few seconds. My T-Bird was the opposite, it would barely be above 1000 even when cold, then would usually stall when I put it in gear.

perfectly normal mine does that as well when i leave my car for awhile for when its cold outside.... it goes away in a few seconds.
