Well hello all, I'm a fresh new owner of a 2005 lincoln ls. It's got the 3.9 v8 and I got it for a steal of $800. It has 137k miles. They said it has a blown head gasket but from a quick view I think it might actually a coil pack. My friend used to own one of these they eat those things like crazy. Anyway I'll be a regular from here on. It's my second car to soon be my DD. The mustang is my current DD that I'm wanting to retire for racecar purposes.

A bad COP wouldn't give symptoms of a blown headgasket.. Cracks in the cooling system would, but I hope it wasn't given away for a minor problem like that.

Well the only issue it's having is it has #6 cylinder misfire. And pretty much no get up. But my friend had one. So I will be replacing all the coils and gutting the catalytic converters and if she runs great awesome! If not I'll actually replace the blown head gasket! Again even if it is the head gasket I still got a steal. I work on cars on my own so I will save myself a ton of money!! She's almost perfect a small hole in the driver seat and the rear bumper is cracked. That's it!

as long as the cost of repairs to get it back in good shape doesn't exceed the cost to buy it, then it's really a steal. a head gasket issue is definitely caused by cooling problems not addressed quickly by the previous owner.

Yea that's the only thing I hate about buying used cars. I take very well care of my cars. And you just never know how the previous owner took care of it though.

No matter how you look at this $800 is a great deal. Since you're good with a wrench you could part it if worse comes to worse and easily make 3xs that. I for one seriously doubt it's a head gasket issue. I would not be surprised if you needed coils and all of the plastic cooling parts replaced though. Please only use motorcraft brand parts, the aftermarket parts for this car (for the most part) are garbage.

What he said...

Jjcool those were my exact intentions. I checked and it all looks clear. The coolant is clear the oil is regular colored. I do think it need the reservoir. But like you I highly doubt it's the head gasket. I am going to replace all the coils at once and not screw around with them. I jumped on this deal as soon as I saw it. I've done just about anything when it comes to cars so I'm not a noob. Just want to put the mustang down for a bit and do a fuel engine rebuild and a 5.0 stroker kit on it so I need another DD. And well it was to good to pass up.

Joegr you're the man!! One quick question though. So if the oil and the coolant look good. The head gasket would be blown between the pistons right? So that means I would have to check the compressions of cylinders 5,6,7? Right?

Mostly true, but you would only need to look at 5 and 7 if 6 actually has a bad reading. Of course, really you usually want to do a compression test on all cylinders to verify that they all have similar compression.

However, I think that the odds are against it actually being a headgasket issue.
What exact codes are you getting?

You know I cant remember. Only one code. It was the code ford cylinder 6 misfire. And that's it. I checked it with my SCT tuner for my mustang. No other codes that's it.

The reason that I ask for the exact code, is that there are different "misfire" codes. There's one for misfire for unknown reasons, and there's one for a problem with the primary circuit for a coil. If you have the latter, it could be a wiring or a PCM issue (still, the odds are with the coil itself).

I am at work at the moment so I can't get you the code. But I almost want to say it was something like P0306

No. That's what the dealership told me. Lol I really don't think it is. It idled for 15 min without any overheating what so ever. None at all.

you're so lucky, that dealership probably has no clue on the LS and just want to get rid of it :Beer

if there's a cats issue, it will also show a DTC at least ("something like inefficiency code")

Well my buddy had one. And had the common coil issue. And the catalytic issue. So first things first. It's at my buddies detail shop right now. Lol drove it straight there. Then going to change the coils then gut the cats then a tune! Well the time if that coils and gutted cats fixes the issues. Lol I am feeling very positive about this buy!!

If it makes you feel even better, I've never heard or seen of an LS with a head gasket issue. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never seen it.

Nice, I always think about picking up something real cheap and flipping for a profit, as you can see by my signature pic im a big Deville guy, so that's mostly what I look at, saw a 2001 Deville DHS with the night vision for only $1,200, I liked how close it was to me as well, didn't like the mileage though 255,000! Seemed to have the similar issues the car you picked up have, and a few other ones that I didn't quite want to deal with.
