Everyone seems to be having issues with the cooling system these days lol

Anyway, she overheated on me today, pulled over, smoke every where. Popped the hood, coolant level was low and it was wet up by the radiator. Had to get her towed, for the first time in the 5 years i've owned her. Truly sad to see. :(

Overheated on me summer 2010, had the degas bottle replaced, supposedly(according to my mechanic) with an OEM motorcraft one. Overheated again summer 2011, supposedly blew a seal somewhere near/on the radiator and had the raditor, thermostat, and related hoses replaced.

No problems until January 2012. It overheated on me again. I was driving back to PA and decided to pull over to take some pics and video of the car. Did a couple of WOT pulls and soon after i hear the fan start running really loud. Having had issues with overheating before i thought "oh crap, its going to overheat." So i try to get back on the highway, hoping that the cold air and cruising at highway speeds at low rpms would keep the car cool enough to get me to my destination. WRONG.

Got the check temp message, immediately followed by the "cutting engine power" message. Thank god there was a gas station about a quarter mile away. Pulled over. Turned it off let it cool down, and i made it to the gas station. I pop the hood, and look at the coolant reservoir and the coolant was boiling! Splashing and what not all over (inside the bottle). I pop it open thinking it will help cool it down . And a whole bunch spilled out from behind the bottle, right above the driver’s side front wheel.

Anyway, I let it cool down. Added a bit more coolant and drove to PA. It hadn’t overheated since, but on spirited drives the fan came on really loudly and it wouldnt stop no matter how long I let the car idle. I would have to turn it off and let it cool down over night. I also smelled coolant everytime i drove it. Should have taken care of it earlier :/

Well shes at the shop now. I'm thinking its the bottle again as i saw it leak right behind the driver's side front wheel. But it was also wet up front so i dont know. Any thoughts? Just venting really...

Oooohhh nnnooooooo! That sucks seeing it towed. I only had mine towed once when i first got it, to get inspected (tags had expired)

Let us know what they find. hopefully it's nothing crazy. At least that tow truck looks stylish now, lol.

Best way to have it towed...no more dollies for me lol.

When the engine overheats so much that the coolant boils, the steam will force coolant to vent via the degas bottle cap. That may be the only reason for the coolant "leak" by the driver's wheel. On the other hand, it should never be wet up front, there are no emergency vents there. You have a problem somewhere up there, at the least.

I've insisted on having any of my cars towed this way every since that kind of tow truck became available. I remember the "good ole days" when they towed with the front wheels on the ground. You were lucky if all you needed after that was a front end alignment.

+1 ^^^ not to mention since the front steering doesn't lock up, its down right dangerous

Ya know, I'm really starting to feel good about replacing every hose, tube, bottle, connection, etc of the cooling system last October just before she got to 100k.

I thought this thread was going to be a link to a porno.

I am dissapoint.

Well shes back...

and there goes my hi-flow magnaflow cats install. Spent all the money i had saved up for my cat install. Oh well i guess it'll have to wait a bit longer.

Things replaced:

T-stat housing, water pump, and related gaskets. Total: $352. Not too bad tho, right?
