Helllllllpp..I think my LS is dying...Engine Power Reduced

Let me explain..

On my way home yesterday from work...which is exactly 19 miles...started to downpour pretty bad....here comes the warning sound and my coolant light comes on, and the screen says "Check Engine Temperature - Power Reduced"

I noticed hardly no acceleration power, but this only lasted for about 5 minutes...there was no where to pull over and traffic was heavy anyway...

I called the dealership today and they cannot get to my vehicle until approx 3-4 days from now...

Today I am driving to gas station..and it happens again...I know a pretty trusty mechanic @ a Sunoco station and pulled in an asked him to take a look at it....of course, everything was fine at this time....

I pulled off and immediately came back because the same problem happened..only this time the check engine light came on as well.....

The mechanic/tech plugged the computer in and tells me it's the "Mass Air Sensor"....and they can't do anything today because the parts supplier is closed..

Anyone else had this problem??? How much to repair? I have an 02 LS V8 w/ 60k miles..

Another problem...if I play my radio for more than 20 minutes..if I am washing my car for instance..the battery dies...I've taken the battery into Auto Zone and each time they tell me it's fine..no dead cells...charging fine....

the MAF is about $175 with a $75 core - 10 mins to replace.

Stock or aftermarket stereo? I don't think 20 mins of the stock radio should be enough to zap your battery. I personally would pursue the electrical problem a little more before I replaced the MAF. The two problems could be related. I wish I could help you more, but I'm sure someone here can.

hey the coolant light and power reduced was my first sign that my car was overheating, i know you said that the maf code came up, but you may have an over heating problem as well. check your coolant level and if it happens again, i would recommend checking your whole coolant system, especially your overflow reservoir for leaks. that was my and many others problem.

Sounds to me like the pcm is going into the limp-home mode because the car is overheating or it thinks it is.

hey 'tech38, I can remember if overheating triggers an engine code or not. If it doesn't then it should, atleast it should store the code even if doesn't flip on the CEL.

Replace your thermostat.

This happened to me this winter. Engine power reduced, coolant light on, etc. Took it to the dealer. They told me it was the thermostat. It was about $25. My grandad replaced it for me and we haven't had that problem since.

Tip: AutoZones free charging system check is NOT always the most accurate. Had a coworker take his 2002 BMW there 2 weeks ago to have his system checked. All was "fine". 3 days later, his car would not start. He jumped the car, drove it to the dealer who did a full load test on their system. It picked up a bad cell. Replaced the battery and that was that.
