IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME , PLEASE GIVE ADVICE AS TO PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!. I TOOK MY 2004 LINCOLN LS TO THE LINCOLN DEALERSHIP ABOUT A WEEK AND HALF AGO TO HAVE FUEL PUMP REPLACED. AFTER PICKING UP CAR AND FILLING UP WITH FUEL, A SMELL OF FUEL FUMES FILL THE CAR AFTER RIDING MINUTES LATER. I TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM FOUND. I RECENTLY FILLED CAR UP AGAIN WITH GAS SINCE THEN AND THE SMELL OF FUEL FUMES CAME BACK INTO CABIN. NOW I KNOW I'M NOT CRAZY AND OW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGGHT IS ON. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON. HEEEEELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

take it back to the dealer have the manager go with you and fill your car up with gas and tell him the check engine light is on
show them what is going on dont just tell them

Agreed, plus if the CEL was on the 1st time you took it back and they didn't scan it then they didn't really care. Go back again.

Thanks, I can already see that I may have found a home.

+1 go to the dealer. There is no need to yell!

Welcome to LVC!

Thanks. Sorry for the yelling I'm just a tick off about wasting so much time and money with the dealership. I just expected more professional, pride, and less error when it came to the dealership.

Yup, my dealer did the same mistake. When they replaced the fuel sending unit, they pinched a vapor return tube. Gas smell in the car was strong.

The fuel tank is under the rear seat, any leaks from there become obvious in the cabin.

They either pinched the vapor line, knocked it off from where it plugs in, or they didn't properly seat the gasket for the tank access plug.

Should be such a simple job, why do dealers make this simple mistake?

Since it happened after a dealer repair, and since it is a safety hazard, they should should be most anxious to make it right.

other common problems are:
- they didn't align the gasket under the lid properly - fumes escaping
- they cross threaded the plastic locking ring - which will go on tight but not completely seal.

with a full tank and some 'spirited' driving, fuel splashes out.

Maybe

maybe the lock clips were not reinstalled on the fuel line hose. remove the plastic cowling and check the fuel filter yourself, you may have a leak.

I think Quik has given the most likely causes. If it were the fuel filter connections, it wouldn't matter if the tank were nearly full or nearly empty.

Quik, you were right, that blue ring is a B!T@#! I'm not sure he would smell fuel in the car from that not being on right though, unless they didnt put the black cover back in place as well.

You can check this by simply pulling up your back seat and inspecting everything on the passenger side after a fillup. Of course, it sucks that you would have to do that with a warranty still on the car.

Hehehe glad you had fun with that. :) I have learned that patience is key with those things. Try to muscle it and the plastic threads get cross threaded easily which makes it even more of a pain.

yeah, the funny thing was, after wrestling with it for 10 minutes, lining up the threads, it randomly just sat down right and i was able to easily turn it about 5 times and then crank it the rest of the way. a visual check to ensure gasket contact all the way around and good to go.

the hardest part by far was cramming the seat belts back through the holes in the seats:mad:

Thanks for all the great and immediate replies. The LS has been at the dealership since yesterday. i should be called whenever situation has been corrected.

Which way does the back seat pull up? I have never done this and would like to try so I can take a look at things...

look under the front edge at each corner - there is a black lever you move to the side, which allows the front corner to be pulled up.

the outside two seatbeat buckles pull through the hole in the seat, the center one disconnects by pushing a paperclip into the hole in the expansion buckle and pop it apart - then pull the buckle through.

so - undo front levers, lift up front, pull back of seat out, undo buckles.

On both sides, there's a little clip just under where your knees would be. Slide the spring loaded lever over and then lift the seat up. Push the belt buckles through and move the seat out of your way. You should see a round black cover underneat some sound deadener. Pop that off and you will see the blue lock ring like in the pictures above.
