Seperated and resealed headlights since was getting moisture in 1, took out amber lenses, did the 3m headlight restore, plasti dip eyebrows, and plasti dip bumper marker lights.

First I have to rant a little,
1) search feature sucks since so many results appear. So many post to read to get the info you want. I will never make fun of someone who ask a question and gets responses to use the search feature. I guess since there are so many post on this board that is what happens.
2) Seperating and putting these lights together sucked!!!!I got sealant all over kitchen counter, I did not find any deffinite answers through search on how to put them back together/remove old sealant, just a vague one saying reheat in oven, blah!!!
3) Once I got to the point of putting them together I had to squeeze the 2 peices together with a c clamp to get them all the way together.

Ok, so I start by putting the headlight in the oven at 225 for 10 minutes (I have the grey sealant headlights), try to pull it apart with my hands (from reading searched post says comes apart easy, to me that would be by hand, silly me) so I put it back in a few more minutes, meanwhile find a screwdriver. Take it back out and pry with screwdriver and it comes apart leaving a mess of sealant. So now I think, how do I get the old sealant out easily. Go back to search feature, read through gobs of post, hmmmm, dont see any mention of removing the old sealant??? So I start picking and scraping at it and give up, screw this. I read in one of the post stick light back in oven to put back together with old sealant.

Now while apart I take out the amber maker lens, yea!!!!! I use the 3M kit to restore the clear lens, mine was not terrible like I see some of you guys post, but could use it, and one of my headlights has tiny spider cracks in the lens, figure lets see if can get them out. (did not come out)

After doing the 3M headlight restore I add the eybrows with Plasti dip. After doing this now it would have been a better idea to do the eyebrows after lights back toghether.

Now to put these biathes back together. I get some grey sealant from autozone, add it in the channel and attemp to put headlight 1 together. Not a chance, too much old sealant in the way not allowing both peices to close all the way. So take it apart and sealant is everywhere. Stick it in the oven at 250. Now thinking what is best way to put back together, middle black headlight seperator in first, or with clear lens at same time. 10 minutes later pull headlight from oven, put black seperator in first-excellent, next the clear lens, ooops got grey sealant on black seperator, open again, remove sealant, reinstall carefully not to get sealant on black seperator again. Now try to squeeze together, damn will not go all the way together and keeps pushing apart when I let go. Ok, back in the oven, take second light out of oven meanwhile and try this one. This one gets together almost all the way, bottom together and get clips on, top close, the end by the marker light still needs to go in some, get out c-clamp and clamp together-yea it worked!!!!! Pull out first headlight and do same with c-clamp. Whew. Sealant all over counter, clean that up.

During all this the plasti dip eyebrow on one light gets a little messed up, so I will need to redo that one, had enought today, headlights go back on car.

So on a scale of 1-10 suckness 10 being the suckiest I give this a 6-7 suckness score. Maybe because I expected 2-3 hours and it took me 5 not counting about 2 hours on the board doing search, and maybe because I am getting old and have no patience, or maybe just dont like doing this type of crap. Dont know, this is my write up.

Overall, I deff. like the way the car looks from front better now. See pics below.

There is no clear on the eyebrows or marker light yet, I need to order.

Awesome work man! They seem professionally done, I've yet to get a nice clean line with Plasti-dip. Did you do wet coats and removed the tape before the dip dried? i have to try that.

I used the green tape that came in the 3M kit to tape it off, put 4 coats on it, I would say between coats was not 100 percent dry, I think it was close to fully dry if not fully dry when I pulled off the tape, probably was drying about 30 minutes between last coat and tape removal.

Protip: I've had much better luck searching for threads by using google. When doing your search on google, first do site:lincolnvscadillac.com and it will only search pages on this site. To limit mostly to the LS section, I add Lincoln LS to the search string, then whatever I am looking for. It definitely works better than the built in search function.

I'm liking the eye brows,, I wonder it it would be possible to apply it to the inside of the lense?? I wonder if the would appear more facory and shiny on the outside?

I can't fully appreciate the steps of assembly,( thanks again to Soopa) BUT I certainly do appreciate the finished product!

Finished product came out very nice and it sounds like you had a horrible experience in the process 250 seems a little to hot for me i baked mine at 215 for 10 min.

I went as high as 275 at one point, like I said I was getting impatient. If I was better prepared with the needed time or had a second set to do this to instead of worrying about getting them back on my car for nighttime it would not be so terrible really. Could have taken my time that way but then cost goes up. Still happy with the outcome, gotta do the fog lights next, they need the 3M kit badly.

I just ordered the Phillips HIR 9011's I am going to put in the low beam spot as someone on the board mentioned can do with little mods. Will take pics of the light when I do it.

Question, since they are 65W do I need to upgrade the harness???

Looks good! I'm surprised you had counter space to work with, what with all the food that's always in that house :D

DAMN RIGHT, I claimed my spot early :)

Next time I try something challenging I will invite you over to help since yo have less patience than me :)

Not wise unless you want your stuff smashed into a million pieces. lol

And yes, his woman can cook like a mofo. Typical Italian. :D

Ok, so my headlight saga continues to break my balls. Let my learning experience give some insight to people going to do this.

Anyway, this morning when I go out to my car I see what looks like moisture in the headlight. Was about 40 degrees this morning. Figured ok, maybe did not seal 100 percent. I take the headlights out of my car during lunch and spread some black RTV silicone around the outside to seal it. I notice the moisture still looks the same, even though they have been airing out. So I pad the end of a screwdriver with tissue and stick it in through one of the bulb holes to see if it will wipe away. Ummm, NO!!!!!! WTF, stick my finger in there and it is not coming off. Seams to me by guessing that the grey silicone I put in the channel before putting the lights together has had some kind of reaction on the inside of the lens. This is my guess, cause they were clear when I put them on yesterday. I am guessing it will get worse.

Anyway, if you do it, stay clear of silicone I guess.

See pics below

Now if the headlights made it this far with Tommy, the hammer would deffinetly be coming out now :)

See, the thing is, don't remove the old sealant. I don't think it's just silicone.
All this pertains only to the grey sealant. The black stuff is the devil's doing.
When taking apart, it'll start to string out. Just get some scisors or a good knife and cut it before you make a mess. When you go to put it back together, heat in the oven to soften it up, then add just a little silicone of your favorite color (blue, black, grey, clear, whatever) in the spots that are clearly missing some.
Press hard, it'll go back together. If not, then it didn't get hot enough. Reheat. C-clamps are likely to crack the plastic.
While none of this was explicit, I thought it was pretty easy to figure out. But I've been neck deep in various sealants many times.

Don't know about the contamination, but I'd be surprised if it's the silicone. Did you use the 3M kit on the inside? If so, that's probably your issue. You also need to keep the rubber nipples on the back of the housing, preferably re-stuffed with suitable foam to keep the insects out.

Also, I hope you chose an appropriate method to re-seal your shiny new finish. The wipe pads that are included in the kits last about a month or two.

+1 on using Google on this site. The other thing is to re-sort by relevancy. The default is latest post, which is useless for research.

Why did you use regular bulbs? And 65W??! Wow

HID's are roughly the same price online, and give you more light per watt. 35W bulbs in my Navigator light up the road like crazy. The LS came with factory HID's, but I have 6000K bulbs on the way to replace the factory bulbs.

www.ddmtuning.com $30 per kit (two bulbs)

I did not use anything on the inside of the lens other than windex to give a quick clean to get my finger prints off. For the sealant all the post I read just say grey sealant or black sealant, to me that is the RTV sealant, but I guess not. After more google searches the sealant used is something different, alot of other forums say to other types of sealant to reseal.

A few reasons,

1) need to run a relay, which also adds cost
2) the issue with them not liking the flash to pass and high beam usage.
3) illegal for use
4) I cant stand getting blinded by others with them, so I would imagine others would fell the sam way.

Just my .02, everyone has their ways and opinions.

You don't necessarily have to run a relay... depends on how good the kit you use is. But never use HID's for high beam, low beam only. For high beam, silver star ultra's would probably be the best way if you feel the need to change them.

I can't speak on laws where you are, but in Texas it's legal if the car was designed for use with them. The cars designed for use shouldn't blind you... Assuming you don't use an over powering 55W kit.

It may be personal taste, but theres one thing I wouldn't give up on the 6000k's on my truck. When that light hits a reflective surface on the road, it glows. Markers, signs, and construction markers are highly visible.

Good follow up and explanation. I'm ordering the angel eyes for my car (2002) and I wouldn't want to make the same mistake. Now I will make my own write up and see how everything comes out.

Having just installed my HIDs the other day this trips me out. Reflectors are sooo bright.

Hey Nick,

Not to totally hijack post but speaking of illegal (few posts up), is it legal in NY to do the clear corners like you did? I'm gonna do my 00LS lights soon and the clears look awesome, but I don't know if NYC cops will break balls (I'm in Queens).

Any idea?

Looks great BTW.
