So I was looking at this Gen1 mark, I believe a 93, that came with the cell phone in the center council. I also noticed a button on the A pillar with a pic of a phone with speaker opening just below it. Was hands free cell phone an option in these marks?

I believe it was. Its not 93 only, it was a option on all years i believe. (my 96 has it)

Its funny how they had all this high tech stuff on cars from the 80's and 90's and now these car companies are trying to pass it off as new

my 98 has that old analog phone...and the antenna sticking out of the rear window (which I hate)
haha

The only thing that analog phone is good for his "chunking at tailgaters".

I can see their expression now..
"HE JUST THREW HIS CELL PHONE"
...."and it was SO BIG/heavy it TOTALLED my car"!

I threw an old bag phone at a car once, broke the grill off his Impalla SS.

I've got one in my '94 as well. This was really a big deal back then. I checked my window sticker... it was a $690.00 option.

I know it's weird, but I kind of like the old antenna... Of course, I'm getting old and I've always lived in the sticks, so can remember seeing those antennas on cars back in the day and thinking "the guy driving that car must be a big-shot." Now kids look at it and think "the guy driving that car must be a big goober." Maybe their right, but I'm still keeping mine.

But you're right, it's kind of funny how the manf. now sell this option as "new & innovative." Yep, innovative... 16 years ago.

Wow this might be the dumbest question ever, but Ill ask anyway,
Is there anyway to get that hands free system to work? Mine came with the phone and the booklet and all and I know analog is history but has anyone came up with a way to make it work, possibily with a blue tooth adapter or somthing?
I hate ear pieces!

when my dad got his first 8 back in 94 , he had the phone activated, it worked nicely, you push the button on the A pillar and a female voice would say "name please" and you could say something like, "call bob" and it would say "calling bob" ,worked pretty much like todays "NEW" phones.

when you got a call the radio would switch right over to the caller.automute etc.

too bad it could not be swapped out with digital srrvice today.

My 97 has it, The only thing I like is when my grandson is in the car, I push the button, and it asks for a name, and my grandson says "DEVIN 4YRS OLD"!:D

That Video is what I was talking about. It has to be able to be done. I dont see why you couldnt do that and have it come through your cars hands free set up.
There is a way, most people are just too quick to say "No" and others are too stupid to figure out how. I'm in that last category.
Somone here knows how to do it, you guys know everything!

Thanks trans.
Ill check to see if anyone I know can use that info to do mine.

hands free

My JVC head unit links up via bluetooth to do hands free calling through the stereo system, bluetooth links up to my phone that has 8 gig of music stored on it, 1280 songs right now and also links up to my garmin so the voice directions from the garmin come over the stereo as well.
Phone also links to garmin so its a portable hands free set up in rental cars.
Pretty cool.

I kept the original phone that was in the center console on my '97. It still works if you plug it in (albeit with no service). Now I'm very tempted to try this modification. It would work sweet with my Blackberry Tour 9630. :D

the head unit im gettin has bluetooth but i want to find a way to activate it by the button on the a pillar. And use the factory mic, below the button. Prolly to complicated but im goin to tryn look into it. If anyone has some opinions on makin it possible.... feel free to add....

My CarPC

Yeah I took off my A-Pillar and took out the electronics for the old mic system. I wired in a mic in the same position and am using the same stock button to initiate calls. It hooks up to my CarPC's MIC IN jack. And my phone is connected through bluetooth to my USB Bluetooth adapter/dongle. The audio is routed from my phone through the bluetooth into the soundcard and out to my amplifiers which then go to my speakers.
Restoration in my car is a challenge but I try to keep stock features as best I can.

I use Centrafuse for my mobile Shell application.
Everything is touch executed on a 10.5" VGA screen in the dash.

Check out my photos.
