i can get a 97 trans with 90k miles on it and a mach 1 TC thats never been used for 500 bucks locally, good buy or no?

No I always get them confused but if memory serves the Mach/Marauder/Mark TC are all the same. I know when I first got on here people were saying the Marauder was a good upgrade but then that was debunked not too long ago.
I cant say for sure though and dont want to start a wrong rumor. That being said I sold my 97 trans with a J-mod and the trans was PERFECT for $200. If I had a different year Mark then I have I would only hunt for a 98 trans since the updates are all big improvements.

sounds too high,
just to give a point of reference,
4 years ago i bought a 2002 gt trans/and tc with 60k on it for $400.00
i know at the time the price was about average and the mileage was on the lower side of what was available at the time
